Here's the official BMW TIS guide on how to do it.

BMW factory manuals alway say, simply, "remove bolt". Finding the bolt, and getting access to removing it is a whole 'nuther thing! If your car is an automatic, give up now. There are few BMWs more difficult to replace the starter on than an automatic 318ti. A stick is slightly easier because you don't have the transmission case reinforcement casting to deal with when trying to get a wrench on it as you do in the automatics. It looks easy. It isn't. If your price includes the new starter (and I'd replace the whole thing, not just the solenoid with these starters' history), then that's a screaming deal. Take it.

You could always take a look at it yourself and see what you think. But don't bother looking near the alternator like "barische" suggested. It's bolted through the transmission housing at the back and top of the engine.
