Default clearing check engine

when in to mech. and he said it had both o2 sensors code bad. I installed both o2 sensors (very easy) and took it back and he cleared it and the check engine light is still on??? I went to another place and they show no codes coming up.

I don't get it. Your mechanic cleared the error but the light was still on when you drove away? Might want to provide more details there.

Check out the reset tools at Bavauto.com

318ti > tools, manuals & fluids > reset tools & code readers

I have the first one ($149.95) and it lets you access and reset codes at your leisure as well as reset oil light and the service indicator bars. I can't personally vouch for the $69.95 tool...I don't think that lets you read error codes.

This is a common problem.

he fixed the error code and the parts were replaced (so the light re-sets), but you have to go through a drive cycle to actually get a complete system re-check.

Normally it is three start-stops you have to go through, but I seem to find it is at least 30 miles regardless of number of start-stops of the engine.

It could be that you are chasing the problem up-stream- you replaced the O2 sensors (which may have been bad) but you may find that the cat needs to be done now for example, which caused the O2 sensors to go bad...

re-scan it, and see what errors pop up. The OBD-II system is good, but far from perfect!
