chains or winter tires?

As you might know, ti's aren't good in the snow.
i have pretty new tires on, and the first winter, they were awesome (but i did not really drive much in the snow). last winter, their was a bad snow storm, and i barley made it home. i did 5 - 15 mph the entire way home, and when you live 20 miles from your work, its hard. also, i live around ALOT of mountains, not step, but they exist, and are very hard to get up.

people were passing me without problems that night, and i was barley able to get home.

to prevent this next year, what should i go with? chains on the tires i have now, or a 2nd set of rims/wheels with winter tires on them. i saw a set of rims/wheels on here for $500, and i was thinking them, but do chains work better? they are much cheaper, and i only will need them in bad storms.

any info on chains or tires would be great.. thanks alot!

maybe studded tires would be better, I live in Vermont I don't ever see people with chains on their tires

I got Bridgestone Blizzaks for my sons Ti, With them on he drove all winter back to school 45 miles each way and not once spinning a tire. I drove it in the ice and snow and what a huge difference it made. It drove like a Sherman Tank in the ice and snow. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't use chains.

Get some good winter tires and you will be happy.

why doesn't anyone use chains tho, is whats the reason? not good? bad for the car? they are much cheaper then winter tires/rims or even just tires.

also, i just found a 03 z4, 6sp, 3,0l for $10.5k .. haha.. VERY TEMPTING. my aunt has a z3, but its just way to girly for me.

In Wisconsin they aren't legal.

in Pennsylvania, they are legal as long as their is a reason you are using them. if u have them on, and their is not a reason, its like a min fine of like $40 or something..

my tires are pretty good, its just once in awhile, the snow is to deep to not have something better.

Cheap chains = body damage.

Mine for my Jeep cost 200 bucks a pair, but I can drive 45 on them and they stay on the tires. Real cain not cable.

You have to use cables or low profile chains on the ti...

Forget the tires, chains, and studs. Get a track conversion kit. I want this for my Cherokee.

You can't drive very fast with chains on, nor very far on dry pavement, without them them tending to disintegrate.

Winter tires last, and are way more fun to have on the car. Compared to summer tires, they also give you better traction, even on clear, wet pavement, below 40-45 deg F or so, and dry pavement, below freezing.
