I have holes all through my exhaust, and am thinking about redoing the whole system. My current plan is to buy aftermarket headers and then straight pipe it out. is this stupid? also, I am noticing that ALL headers are pretty expensive. Is there any economic way to fix my exhaust system, or do I have to spend a lot of money? any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks for all your help guys! | | | 08-12-2007, 04:33 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | 1. No point in headers you won't be able to measure the power difference without other work. Soapbox Mode on..... 2. Straight pipes are going to be illegal in all 50 states. Your just hurting all of us by making your car loud enough to tick people off. Right now the Auto enthusiasts need to keep things real on the street, states are passing laws almost daily ruing our hobby, taking away the right to mod your own car. Of the soapbox.... Any good exhaust shop can put the exhaust right for about 250 to 300 if you need the whole pipe done, Or you can likely order pre-bent factory style pipes from a big store like NAPA.... For just a bit less. The BMW exhaust isn't eh hardest one in the world to do its pretty open except for the cross under the suspention area... BMW ones can be had for about 650 bucks. bimmerworld has supersprint headers for 997 bucks. and then there are those ebay ones. So... Still trying to find some in my budget. I don't think I'll be able to get the ebay ones right now. Won't really be able to justify that w/ the folks. | | | 08-12-2007, 06:08 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2005 Location: Portland Oregon Posts: 1,363 | ya half or one grand for some pipes dosent sound logical to me...I think I better wait tell I MUST replace them. | | | 08-12-2007, 07:41 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | The BMW exhaust manifold system is designed to give low end torque. Notice how they're already shaped a lot like headers (total distance to exhaust is calibrated to allow for just enough back pressure to keep torque up at low rpms). Aftermarket really doesn't do much, and can hurt performance on the low end. | | | 08-12-2007, 09:18 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Auburn, WA Posts: 1,814 | 1+ __________________ 5/96 318TI Sport BIG TURBO | | | 08-12-2007, 03:06 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | Quote: Originally Posted by momorugger well, can they repair the headers. There are no emissions or anything here. | It is against federal law to remove any type of emission control equipment that was stock on the car... So it is illegal to remove a catalytic converter on your car, not to mention that it will make your car very loud. You may not have inspections where they will check for it, but it is illegal. You'd probably have a hard time selling a BMW street car with straight pipes on it. Not to mention what other members have said about killing all of your low end torque, which we already don't have enough of. | | | 10-03-2007, 02:53 AM | #11 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Maryland Posts: 4 | yea i just took off my remus muffler until i get a new muffler this weekend cuz it sounded like ****, but that was a mistake. its redicously loud on my 96 318i..... but does anyone have a borla muffler on their 318?? | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
