This happens all of the time where I give someone advice, they go messing around with stuff but don't follow my advice, and then they come back asking for more advice. You gotta understand that it makes things extremely difficult to diagnose. When people change things the symptoms change. It's very irritating for mechanics when we can't duplicate the symptoms. For example, people bring their cars to me all of the time and say "well it was making this noise..." then I find out they sprayed WD40 on everything and now I have to guess where the noise was coming from.

Hey coolJess, thanks again for the advice. I checked for air leaks with the engine cold this morning and its definitely the SAP that's spewing air out when the engine is cold. I pressed down on top of the pancake shaped SAP and the air stopped coming out so the rivets are definitely bad. I also used the brake cleaner method to double check the intake boots, so those are looking good now.

do you know if the CEL will clear on its own if it was the intake boot causing the CEL misfire?

thanks again!!

No worries man. Misfire codes are typically stored until they're cleared with a scantool. Whether or not the CEL will go out on it's own, I'm unsure. A long time ago, I had an o2 sensor heater circuit code and the CEL was on. Once I installed a new o2 sensor, the CEL went off on it's own after a few miles, but the codes remained stored until I cleared them with my scantool. Your best bet is to fix the SAP, then buy rent or borrow a scantool and clear the codes. This will also clear the light, so after you've driven a hundred miles or so and given the monitors a chance to reset themselves, if the light remains off, you'll know you've fixed it. Fix your SAP already, it's easy If you were a little closer, I'd do it for you.

No I don't think it will. Sure man, it's a cool place to hang out and have lunch. There's not many things on the ti that I haven't torn apart and fixed, so if you ever need help just let me know.
