Default Door popping upon opening

I did a search and found one thread in the archive for the same problem. But no solution was posted.
When I open the driver's door there is a popping sound that I think is coming from the door hinge. This happens within the first 3 inches of opening the door. I've lubricated the hinge pivot. But no change. Maybe there's a plastic or rubber piece that has worn through and now there's metal to metal contact somewhere inside the door hinge area?
Any ideas?
