I wanted to get a short shifter. IIRC, the Z3 shifter is 30% less throw than the stock Ti one right?

Would this fit right in without modifications?

Do you guys think this is a good kit?

Will anything else need to be purchased?

Anybody else has this shifter, if so how do you like it?

Thanks.

For those also looking for a short shifter, here's the link

i do think thats all you need.

if i remember correctly its a good idea to bend the selector rod to get it all centered and perfect but that maybe for a different shifter

i just put my z3 shift rod in about 2 weeks ago. That kit includes everything you need. I dont know if those are cir clips in the pic though. If they are then your fine if not your going to need one. I think it was 30 cents from the dealer. Also, i paid 60 all together for my kit. 40 for the rod and 20 for all of the other bushings and such. If you dont mind spending 140 I would say go for it. but you could piece it together for a lot less. Try calling bmw and asking them how much everything is, it might be cheaper. this link should help with part numbers.

This link has some good pics and instruction. You dont need to take out the entire selecting rod. That is only if you want to bend it which I didnt do and it works great.

I'm looking for B&M short shifter. Any comparison between B&M and Z3?

I installed the MZ3 shifter. Total parts from the dealer was under $100.00, that included the selector rod. If you choose not to bend the shifter, you will have to bend the selector rod. One bend is to clear the driveshaft, the other to center the knob.

It doesn't need park distance control, and hates decadence. It is musclepacked, yet lightly wound. It lets you feel the asphalt and get you going with the smallest touch of the pedal. It provokes, seduces, and demands to be driven hard. It looks, sounds, and smells like performance.

No Hugo,

If you are just using the basic Z3 shifter, then you don't have to bend anything at all. The shifter will be perfectly centered, and the selector rod will clear the drive shaft.

You'll reduce the shifter travel by 30% which is nice, but not dramatic.

Now, if you go with the MZ3 shifter, then you have to bend the selector rod and the shifter. Buy the selector from www.understeer.com and the shifter will come bended. You'll just have to bend the selector yourself. Not too difficult (see Ron Stygar's web page on how to do this). This will yield 40% reduction in shifter travel.

Good luck.

If this is all i need (please make correction if more stuff are needed)

25 11 1 434 148 Shift Lever (Z3 1.9)
25 11 1 220 600 Suspension (nylon cup)
25 11 1 220 379 Circlip
25 11 1 220 439 Spacer Ring (2)

then the total comes out to 73.87 Hell of a lot better than 140

Those are the only things you need. Might be a good idea to get an extra cir clip. and some good grease.

The spacer ring is now integrated into the shifter itself. I ordered them but didn't have to use them. As a matter of fact, I couldn't use them.
