I still need the car streetable on occasion. I kinda got myself into a situation...Recaro's aren't cheap, so it may be a bit before I get around to finding cash for that. Economic stimulus $$$ ftw! Until I get a roll bar, the passenger seat is pulling double-duty as the world's heaviest vid cam mount, too! Lexan is cool, but not that much lighter than the stock glass. A local NASA driver went full lexan on his GTS4 M3...he saved 6 lbs on the windscreen, and about 20 lbs on the rest. He said it was a nightmare to swap, too. Said car is the craziest E36 M I've ever seen...311 rwhp n.a., Tec3 stand-alone, the whole ball-o-wax. | | | 03-31-2008, 11:17 PM | #17 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | The car I saw was an e30 318is. His before and after weight was more than that. But he did some really thin stuff for the rear and back rear windows. Layed it against the old glass and cut the pattern. Then cut the tape in about an inch all the way around and painted it black. Layed it into position and started at it with a riveter. Then he had two thin aluminum bars running down the middle about 20 inches apart to keep the back from flexing. Just a little added strength. You can DIY it, and save weight for cheap. More economical then trying to get power out of an m42.. The only reason I don't want to buy something like a sparco or OMP is because then I would have to buy two to make them match.. Part of me says screw it, doesn't need to match. At the same time I think it looks so much better. I wanted to drive it last night so I put the driver seat back in after finishing up with the sound deadening. | | | 04-01-2008, 02:33 AM | #18 | Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: MA Posts: 76 | I can't wait to see your cars get even lighter. It will be interesting to see how a stripped ti racecar compares to similarly stripped e30's and e36 cars. | | | 04-01-2008, 03:02 AM | #19 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | I'm still on street tires. Last time out at sebring the E30 that I was talking about was about 15-18 seconds faster than me. He was atleast 200-300 pounds lighter than me, with better gearing, and r-comps. Not to mention a better driver.. | | | 04-01-2008, 03:33 PM | #20 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Saint Paul, MN Posts: 3,244 | Mohaughn- are those subs installed into the floor under the rear seat?? What was that install like? __________________ My Former Rides 1999 318ti Alpine White, Cali Roof, Dinan goodies 1996 318ti Hellrot California Edition | | | 04-01-2008, 05:55 PM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | No. Those are the covers for the fuel pumps. There is no stereo in the car, no speakers... If you lift up your back seat you will have the same covers. | | | 04-01-2008, 10:25 PM | #22 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Madison, WI Posts: 121 | Dan, what did you replace your sunroof assembly with? I had heard the entire cartridge assembly was close to 100lbs -- is this accurate at all? | | | 04-02-2008, 04:36 PM | #23 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | No. It doesn't weigh that much. I think the entire sunroof and headliner was maybe 50 or 60 pounds. I still have the insert in my garage. I can weight it. I separated the metal outer skin from the sunroof, then used 1" wide aluminum strips from homedepot. I read around and found that 1" wide aluminum that extends atleast 3" past the sunroof opening will pass inspection at most organizations. So I cut two strips to go front to back, and cut two smaller strips to give more support on the side. Screwed everything together high grade machine screws and washers to get the spacing right. Then used black polyurethane caulk to seal everything up nice and tight. If you get right up on it you can see that the seal does not look perfect, but this is not a show car. From a distance of 5-10 feet+ you can't notice. Just make sure to cut down all of the points on your machine screws just so you don't bump out the roof with little points. I did that on a few spots.. | | | 04-03-2008, 05:34 AM | #24 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Scandia, MN Posts: 215 | +1, I'd guess the cartridge is maybe 30 lbs itself, the body panel another 8-10, motor and wires maybe 2 lbs. I was expecting more, but I'll take what I can get; especially that high up on the car. I pretty much did the same thing with putting the body panel back in the hole, black poly caulk, too. Mine is definitely a 5-10 footer. Sort of OT, but it doesn't look good for in-car footage this weekend. Way too much vibration for the cam to even work. The solid engine and trans mounts may have something to do with that. I'll have to wait until I get a roll bar to mount it legit. I'll be sure to get some good stills, though. | | | 04-03-2008, 04:05 PM | #25 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | The trick to making it look smooth is spit.. Get a big goob of spit on your finger tips and you can run that caulk real smooth... Sounds kind of gross... I just wish I could figure out if the kirk 4point competition bar will fit a Ti... Kirk and Bimmerworld can't say for sure. I may end up having to do measurements between my 328 and the Ti. If I knew for sure, I'd have my bar ordered. Update- I talked to the guys at TcKline this morning and they are fairly certain that their 4-point sedan rollbar fits into the Ti. They even gave me a line on where to get them brand new... More details to follow.. | | | 04-04-2008, 05:34 AM | #26 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Scandia, MN Posts: 215 | Quote: Originally Posted by mohaughn Update- I talked to the guys at TcKline this morning and they are fairly certain that their 4-point sedan rollbar fits into the Ti. Nice work! | | | 04-04-2008, 06:04 AM | #27 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | Well TTracing got me more interested in going with a pre-fab bar when he said the autopower sedan bar fits. But the guys at Kirk and Bimmerworld didn't really know. Of course the guys at TcKline now the Ti pretty well, so they knew. I'm just waiting to hear back on when they might be available. If this other company that TcKline recommended isn't going to come through soon I'll probably order a kirk bar. I've not heard anything bad about the autopower bar, but most reports say the TcKline bar is really nice, and the kirk bar is similar if not the same. Price is just about the same for all of them. Updated interior pic- Covered up the exposed seam sealer and the base grey primer with white primer. I also had some areas that were started to rust a little bit so i cleaned up those areas and sprayed them with rust inhibitor and primer... I have some Alpine white on order to get the color matched up better. But having the white primer down will let me get away with using a lot less of the much more expensive BMW color matched paint. | | | 04-04-2008, 03:38 PM | #28 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: Scandia, MN Posts: 215 | Looks good, man! The more I think about it, the more I want to completely strip mine, too. Stripped with a light-weight seat and roll bar could easily be in the 2400 lb range, if not less. I've seen a 318is that was about 200# lighter than that even. So if you want to remove glass for lexan you can get even lighter. | psh.....should be well under 2500 with me and alaskablue in the m42 ti what does the aluminum M52 weigh? S50's can be had for less than one of these. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | Similar Threads | Thread | Thread Starter | Forum | Replies | Last Post | CRAZY M44 Problem | WhoNew | Engine | 21 | 02-17-2009 07:01 PM | Crazy swap idea | Borg561 | Engine Swaps | 5 | 04-14-2008 05:58 PM | crazy bass song! | sjp96ti | Music to drive by | 29 | 03-30-2008 05:37 AM | Crazy M5!!!! | HuGo | General Chit Chat | 7 | 06-25-2007 07:34 PM | crazy idea | andyman7931 | Engine | 9 | 03-01-2006 05:49 PM | |
