Default idle situation

got a question??? my 96 ti automatic normally idle at 750-800 but when I turn on the AC, and I'm stopped at a light, the idle goes down to about 400 then goes back up, without the AC, idle is just fine..any clue? took it to the shop and hook it up, no code came up.

Sounds just like any other car I've driven. Sounds normal.

no..I know it will change when I turn the AC but why does it idle down when I stop at a light or stop for a certain amount of time. that is my conundrum.

This happened to me. I call it the bouncing idle. I suspect that the idle is set at a point that is ok for idling with no accessories on. The AC compressor "bogs" the engine at idle that the DME over compensates, shooting up the rpms, then drops the rpm back to the set point, but the cycle starts again when the idle drops b/c of the AC. I cleaned the ICV, got a new Dinan chip, nothing helped, except putting on a set of VAC underdrive pullies. This made any parasitic losses 10-15% less. After I put the pullies on, no more bouncing idle.

This is for a 1995 M42 motor. The new motor from 96-99 is an M44. Check to make sure these are correct for your model year.

I can't be sure there are pulleys for the M44, but do a search and find out. I see you have a '96, which is a M44
