Default japanese headunits

I currently have a Sony head unit which was already installed when i bought the car (used). I want to change it to a pioneer. Does anyone know if the current wiring connector in the sony is compatiable with pioneer decks, or will i have to purchase the pioneer adaptor to fit with the BMW one?

thanks

its quite a simple switch though..just match wire colors and crimp em to the new adapter.

Or if you dont like cutting and crimping, you can buy a harness adaptor from someone like autoleads, that will have the bmw conector one end, and the iso connector on the other end. The pioneer should come with an iso plug on the other end of the loom to the headunit connector.

For some time, there has been an industry standard plug " iso " to simplify matters when changing head units.

cool! thanks for the replies and the link.
that's one of the cheaper ones i've seen. some of the ones i've found are £20.

i'll probably end up wiring it up myself, shouldn't be too hard.
really depends on how much time i want to spend wiring it up, and whether i want to put the old head back in when it comes to selling the car later on.

we'll see how it goes.

thanks again

I wired my Alpine headunit by myself, but that was merely because the previous occupant had destroyed the BMW OEM wiring loom so I had to crimp on bullet connectors and do it via that way.

Its a pain compared to just plugging in ISO connectors but atleast it takes up less space and it is therefore easier to put the headunit back in place.

yeah, shouldn't be hard,
i wired up my last system in my car back in Aust. Only thing is, i don't have all the tools here (UK). my crimper, multimeter, heat shrink, spare wires are all back there. can't justify buying another set just for this one. hmmmm...

might just spend the extra bucks on the harness to save time and money. (those crimpers aren't cheap).

£14.99 still a bit high..

i got a BMW -> ISO connector from ebay for £2.99 last year - which was good because my JVC takes ISO

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-ISO-ADAPTE...QQcmdZViewItem

My last sony needed an ISO -> sony adaptor

whatever - don't cut the wires - not worth it even to save £14.99 - did it on my old golf & regretted it

cool! thanks for the tip, Monk3y666!
i'll have to check to see if the new head has an ISO connector.
i'm only gonna buy a cheap head unit, so if i do end up cutting the wires, i'll just leave the HU in the car when i sell it. i only need a CD player coz i don't have any cassettes, and radio gets boring sometimes.

now that i don't know
the stock RDS BMW cassette i had was apparently pre-wired for a CD changer - but one was never fitted - i found the end of the CD changer cable behind some trim behind the rear seats, but i don't know if that was connected to the head unit (or even how)

I had 2 choices - buy a CD changer & replace the head unit

i went for the mp3 cd head unit option

with any sony/jvc/pioneer/alpine head unit - you'll probably need a BMW -> (3rd party/ISO connector at minimum) & maybe an antenna barrel. - but no idea about the head unit end of the autochanger cable

there's gotta be somebody out there that knows
