Default ECU reset?

my ecu is stuck on a bad code from years ago (regarding the speedo, nothing important). it doesn't throw new codes for bad components eventhough i've run into problems and replaced bad parts. i didn't even get the CEL. i tried to erase the ecu by disconnecting the battery, and also with the gas pedal method but the same old code keeps coming up.

my concern with this is that if the computer is stuck on a a bad code it might not be reseting adaptation after i replaced split hoses and such. it keeps failing the emission test because HC ppm is too high while every other aspect is well under the limit.

any thoughts?

a main dealer is your best option, if they cant do it you will still pay a minimum charge though. a mobile auto diagnostic is probably no better than you trying to cancel it.

The 5 pedal method and disconnecting the battery does not clear stored codes. You need to use a code reader, or take it to a mechanic that has a GT1 or an autologic.

the pedal method should allow you to erase stored codes after they cycle through. and disconnecting the battery should reset adaptation - according to bentley. though i'm not sure if adaptation is resettable on the 1.7dme. but this thing is stuck and while i've had several problems they never set off the CEL. i've run out of things to replace on the car to pass the emission test so that's why i'm considering problems with the ecu.

i just picked up that softcar garbage but maybe it shows something. as soon as i get the right card to hook up the cable i'll give it a whirl.
