Default Z3 3.0 shifter

I have one in my 318ic. I've really liked it. Will this short shifter work in a M44 Manual?

No reason why it shouldn't. I've had an mcoupe shifter in my car before (even shorter throw, about 50% reduction), but it was too notchey for me, went with a M3 shifter.

Yes, the Z3 3.0 starts out notchey, but it lightened up after a week, or my hand started to like it. That sounds odd...

Anyone actually install this shifter? Just wondering if it cleared without any other modifications... Thanks!

^ Good question, I was wondering the same thing about the Z3 1.9 Shift Lever. Generally speaking do all SSK's or levers install in the Ti's without requiring any modifications, for example lever or selector rod bending, ?

I put a 1.9 shifter in my car. The selector rod clears the vibration damper with very little room to spare. I'd imagine that if you used any shifter with more bend it would require modification to the selector rod.

Anyone try a Z4 2.5 shift rod?

James, was the M3 shift rod you installed the middle one in the pic?

I have the second one installed in my 318ic (E30). Love it.

BTW, not my pic, just referring to one in a thread over at M42club.

The middle one is from a M-coupe/rodster, not the M3. I installed that as part of the swap process. The Selector rod needed to be bent substantially, and it ended up grazing the driveline in second and fourth gears. Replaced it with a standard M3 shift rod which allowed a little straightening of the selector rod and no interference either..

I am using the ti tranny with my S52 and the M3 shifter fouled on the balancer. I am wondering if the M3 tranny allows more room for options since it is a bit longer...

That was a good picture posted earlier. I have some other shifters coming from BimmerBum to try out as well...

I think we should put a sticky together as this topic comes up every so often and as new car shifters get added to the list we can have a ice resource...

Dave, with the 1.9, what difference did you notice as compared to the stock shifter? I.e. Lower height, shorter throw? Can you quantify? Thanks!

I didn't notice any change in height. At the time, I had a zhp knob and it was still around the same height, maybe a little shorter. Throws were definitely shorter, I've read it is supposed to be 30% reduction and that was noticeable.

I also replaced all the bushings and wear items and it helped to tighten up the sloppiness, but there is still some more slop inherent to the design.

I'm finally going to get around to installing my Z3 1.9 before pulling the car out for spring. I'm glad I remembered this thread so I could check to make sure there is no bending necessary for the 1.9 : )

Anyone with a manual M44 ti using the Z4 3.0 shifter without mod? I run the Z4 2.5 shifter in my M44 318ti manual now. It clears without mod and is at a comfortable height. I use the Z3 3.0 shifter in my M42 E30. Shorter height and throw.

Thanks!
