Default Does anyone here have an engine mounted fan on their Ti?

*note* This only pertains to members who own 318ti's with M42 or M44 engines. This DOES NOT include e36 318i or 318is models, Z3's, e30's or 6cyl swapped Ti's. This also applies only to North American members(United States and Canada).

Just curious, did your car come with an engine mounted fan? I'm not talking about the electric puller fan mounted to the back of your radiator. I speaking of the fan that would normally be mounted to the water pump hub on the front of the engine block. If you look at your water pump pulley, there should be a threaded fitting protruding from the front side of the pulley. If you could see this threaded piece, then you don't have an engine mounted fan. Was your fan removed? Only answer yes if you're absolutely certain that it was. I'm trying to figure out if ANY 318ti's came to America with engine mounted fans. If by chance your car still has the engine mounted fan installed, a picture would be greatly appreciated. Be sure to vote yes or no, it only takes a second to click and you've already read this far. Thanks,

-Jess

I do have a Z3, so I shouldn't reply. But I investigated the matter when I bought my car and had no fan.

All US versions came with no engine driven fan because all US versions had A/C... For some time A/C was optional in other countries so in that case the electrical fan was replaced with the engine fan.

that might explain the confusion Mallard is having in the other thread

I'm 85% sure I have an electric fan, never really thought to check, I'll look tomorrow

That makes perfect sense and explains it. All US Ti's probably came with A/C, therefore all of them came with an electric fan. I can sleep well tonight. Thanks lpcapital! Mallard and I were both right, but Mallard was righter

don't have one. but i've been curious about exchanging my electric fan for an engine mounted one. i don't trust my temperature sensor.

i've also been thinking about adding a switch to my dash somewhere to bypass the temp sensor... but that'd be another thread.

I started listing part numbers... but i think it might just be easier to do this:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/cata..._pg1.htm#item0

lol. they have all the stuff, starting with the Temperature Switch towards the bottom. I'll take a pic later if i get the opportunity. until then:

You can see the fan shroud on the other side of the radiator. there are a few (3 per side IIRC?) brackets that it slides into.

thanks for the pics Nyle, but the fan shroud is for the waterpump based fan.

I want to see the el fan, or is it jus the one from the air-con setup..

Can someone take a pic of their fans, so i can see the setup please?
