I also have the same problem like no low speed. I did all the test like checking the fan H.S. and L.S (good) - temp. switch (good) - relay H.S (good) L.S. (good) checked also for 12V coming from the H.S relay to the L.S (good) and another 12V from pin 85. I knew that everything is working except for the L.S temperature switch that sends signal to the ECM and from ECM to the L.S relay pin 86 to activate the relay and bridge pin 30 and pin 87 (12V going to the fan). I was able to make mine work when it reaches the desired temperature and let my car running for 30 min . What I did is, I spliced a wire from the L.S temp switch wire (with a 7.5A fuse just to be sure if something wrong happens) going to the pin 85 of the L.S relay. This is now my question, Will it affect my ECM because I did not dis-able or cut the L.S. temperature wire going to the ECM and from ECM going to pin 85?

Default BMW E36 318is radiator fan not working on Low Speed

Hi guys

I'm new to this forum. I read your replies n I'm still stuck. Here's my problem

The car over heated and the fan didn't turn on, on high/low speed, so i unplugged the temperature sensor plug(left top of radiator) and jumped it to make high speed work(engine idling and on the "on"position).

The low speed doesn't work when you jump it with the car on the"on" position or idling. Low speed works when the aircon is on with the car idling.

Any ideas on what to do next???

Get yourself BMW e36 Bently Manual
There is trubleshooting procedure.

With AC high speed should work, double check please.

If low speed doesn't work there might be a few problems.
1. And most common - low speed resistor is gone. Easy and cheap fix: http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40133
2. Thermoswitch migh be gone. Easy and not expensive to replace.
3. Check low and HIGH speed fuses and relays. It was reported that when high speed relay is gone, low speed wont work. I doubt that this is your case since you have high speed by jumpering the plug.

Check your temp sensor on the radiator side if it's working,if it works then check your high side and low side relay. High side relay sends a 12V in low side relay to make it workt. This are just the basic troubleshooting. If you just read the forum it will tell you everything what to check or do.

I kinda figure this plague. Mines up and running at temperature(low speed)

Tried all what they say here but it didn't worked.

Thread resurrection...

I am having fan issues. The fan works when the low OR high-speed terminals on the radiator temp sensor are jumped, but neither work with the AC off below 220F (when I turn it off for being too hot).
I don't understand why jumping both low or high-speed circuits will turn the fan on, but plugging it into a NEW Facet brand radiator temp sensor doesn't trigger the fan.

New radiator temp sensor, radiator, thermostat, water pump all installed recently. Fan does not operate as it should.

I did the same thing on two cars a ti and a 318i and it worked
I jumped the temperature sensor on the plug with power and it resurrected the circuit that’s how I got it to work. Same issue on both cars. Same procedure and worked on both cars. I started my go ti I let it warm up and fan worked 100 on time.

My fan works when I jump them, but that doesn't help me. I need the sensor to activate the fan.
Are you saying you changed a part and fixed this issue?

Changed nothing. Let me try to remember more. All it was a dead circuit you can throw a new relay a new fan an d sensor it won’t fix it.

Oh, I might understand what you mean... Perhaps the DME trigger is bad? I have a bad DME trigger on my E46 for the exhaust baffle valve, so I had to run a switch in my own circuit for it to operate. The trigger circuit showed 12v on a meter, but could not supply enough power to actually operate the solenoid.

You need to pull the low speed fan relay and put a jumper on 30 and 87 of the relay socket.
If the fan runs, then you are missing the ground path from the DME.
If the fan does not run, then you are missing the closed contact path of the high speed fan relay (30 and 87). Replace the high speed fan relay.

I will do this. I still don't understand why this would happen though, since if I close the low or high-speed circuits at the fan connector the fan runs (which is exactly what the temperature switch should be doing).
Will come back with an update.
