Hi everyone.. new 318ti owner as of yesterday.. its a 95 clubsport with 97k . Its Hellrot and absolutely gorgeous, looking... I bought this damn thing last night. test drove it for ~ 5 minutes before buying(drove it around the development).. and ON THE WAY HOME.. check engine light comes on.car started to lose power. then it started overheating.. so I pulled off the road.. light faint white smoke coming from the engine bay... got the car towed home. waited to start it until today, got new plugs because I wanted new ones anyways and only plug #4 seems to be getting spark. the others are flooded. but this still wouldnt explain why it overheated.. The engine looked to be in great condition and rode very nice when I was test driving.. I literally purchased the car.. then filled the gas tank, and started to drive home when this all happened.. The guy I purchased it from came over and looked it over with me, and we are stumped. I mean, it shows no signs that it blew a head gasket, Nothing is leaking.Im also not the most auto tech savvy but I have a general feel for how things work.. We drained the coolant system and refilled everything to spec. Im thinking and hoping its just the thermostat and distributor.. any suggestions and help is much appreciated. and if theres anyone in AZ who could possibly look at this with me ill pay or buy you a case of beer, whatever! anything will help at this point. Will it at least turn over? Start with a leak down test. The kit costs about 40 bucks at your local auto parts store. That'll tell you if your head gasket is blown or not. I'm not sure how long you drove it once it overheated, but in most cases you have less than a minute once that needle starts to move to shut her down and pull over. It could be something simple like a fried temp sensor or a cam position sensor, but honestly I think you're about to spend big bucks on a head resurface and gasket job. If only one plug is getting spark, you might look at your coil pack. Also, if you've recently washed the car, you could check the ECU compartment. It sometimes floods with water and stops everything. | | | 07-22-2009, 09:14 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | FWIW I wouldn't worry about ECU compartment flooding, I believe that was fixed in late 94. You have something else going on. __________________ -Jeff | | | 07-22-2009, 09:46 PM | #5 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by Xenocide FWIW I wouldn't worry about ECU compartment flooding, I believe that was fixed in late 94. Just plug #4(the one closest to the windshield shows that its getting spark. all the others show flooded) im hoping it could be a thermostat? A mechanic friend of mine said something about a "water pump propeller" in regards to the car overheating. Im having some dude come do a compression test today. Hopefully he can do a leak test also.. In regards to the coil pack.. The car was washed by the previous owner just a few days ago, then we had a monster storm out here in AZ.. doesnt hurt to check I guess! Im really really hoping that I wont have to spend big bucks.. | | | 07-22-2009, 11:26 PM | #7 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | The thermostat or water pump will by no means keep the car from starting. You say that 3 of the spark plugs are flooded? Do they smell strongly of gas or can you see pools of gas in the cylinders? You can crank the engine with the plugs removed, this should blow anything out of the cylinder holes. Now if those holes are full of water(coolant) then you have big problems. As for the ECU compartment flooding after a wash or storm, that's a pretty rare scenario and usually dries out and returns to normal within a day. | | | 07-22-2009, 11:30 PM | #8 | Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Arizona Posts: 69 | Im thinking it could be a combination of issues.. Ill check again on the cylinders..im dreading looking in there and seeing coolant *crosses fingers* needless to say, this sucks. | | | 07-22-2009, 11:32 PM | #9 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | By now the ECU compartment would have more than likely drained if it were in fact flooded. I'd take a closer look down in the spark plug holes. Make sure they don't have water in there. Crank the engine a couple of times with the plugs removed, then check the holes again. You may even want to drain the oil and check it for water. And finally, open up the coil pack and see if there's any burnt wires in there. Good luck man, let us know what you find. | | | 07-23-2009, 12:50 AM | #10 | Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Arizona Posts: 69 | tons of water in the spark plugs... 2 cylinders came back with 30 compression.. 1 with 98.. the other I didnt even bother testing.. | | | 07-23-2009, 01:15 AM | #11 | Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Arizona Posts: 69 | so. I need a new engine.. I honestly dont know much about these cars yet. But , should I spend a grand on a good used motor? Ive got a buddy who will put one in for 500.00.. should I put a v6 in it? I dont want to go with an M3 motor because im trying to keep my budget below 1500. any suggestions are helpfull.. keep in mind this is a clubsport so I dont know if swapping in a newer or different than stock engine will help or hurt its value! | | | 07-23-2009, 01:45 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | it's an inline-6, not a V6, and to some people it will lower the value due to the car being somewhat rare, but an average person might not care | | | 07-23-2009, 02:32 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Raleigh/Charlotte, NC Posts: 1,233 | I have an m42 head if you want. __________________ -Jeff | | | 07-23-2009, 02:37 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | i have an m42 from a clubsport here for 300. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 07-23-2009, 03:09 AM | #15 | That's not Millpoint Blue Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: BNA Posts: 3,161 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma i have an m42 from a clubsport here for 300. | I vote for this option if you have to replace the engine.
