Default Automatic deceleration chug/catch

So I found this thread and it sounds similar to my problem. I just wanted to solicit advice, especially concerning potential cost of repair because the $$$ for a synchro as mentioned in the linked post makes me question keeping the car.

Problem: when I slow down and/or come to a stop, if accelerate again in short succession the engine revs up but something in the power train doesn't "catch" for a moment. When it does it feels like dropping the clutch in on a manual transmission if you rev up to 2500+ RPM or so. Suggestions? I appreciate the help everyone.

The car: 1997, BMW 318ti, automatic transmission, m44 engine, and a picture just for fun:

Definitely sounds like the fluid is low. I had the same symptom after changing my auto fluid and not getting the level correct on the first try. It seemed to be worse if you brake hard, immediately then hit the gas. I topped it up again and all was perfect. If so, it'll take about $2 in DexIII ATF to fix it. Do you have the procedures for checking the fluid? It's a hassle.

I don't have the procedures for checking and refilling it, though I'm sure they're on the site somewhere. I just have minimal time to look right now with my ship keeping me overly busy.
