Default ews discussion

This was getting off topic from our DIS thread.

Quote:
The ignition cylinder in my ti broke last week and became stuck in position 1 (with or without key), which killed the battery and made the car un-startable/driveable. I had it towed to the local dealership since they were just down the road from where the car was stranded and had them confirm this was the only problem.

They quoted me at $1050 to repair the ignition, so I told them "no thanks" and ordered all of the parts online minus the ignition cylinder, which of course has to be machined by BMW.

A day later I received a call from the service rep who informed me that because the car had a salvage title when I bought it, that BMW could not replace the keys or ignition cylinder for the car without replacing the entire locking system, ignition system, DME , and all associated components, which was well over $1k in parts alone -- although I have receipts for the keys I've ordered from them in the past. So I went to another dealer who of course had no trouble ordering the cylinder.

Tomorrow the car is being towed to my house. I'm concerned that the thieves at the dealership may have tripped the EWS-II unknowingly or that it may have been activated since the battery died with the ignition in pos.1 with no key present: I'll find out tomorrow.

Here is a how-to for physically bypassing EWS-II on an m52/s52, guessing it should be about this easy on an m44?:

Your dealer experience is exactly why we are working on getting DIS functional for home users.

I am pretty sure that EWS won't forget anything. Your old keys should start the car because they have been activated for EWS before. If the dealer disabled all your keys there will be evidence of this (EWS won't forget a key, it retains it and remembers that it is disabled) and your lawyer will have fun.

Perhaps the EWS could be bypassed in the described manner as it could be tricking the car to run by exploiting a safety system designed to keep the car from shutting down while it's on the highway.

The EWS ring antenna is external to the ignition cylinder and is a passive device anyway meaning it is a plug and go replacement. If you need to start your car using the ignition switch with no cylinder, simply hold the key head up to the ring antenna and it will be read.

As far as your ignition cylinder, these cylinders are everywhere in the junkyards. I have never come across a pin-tumbler lock that I could not rekey: even tho I have never taken one of these apart, I am sure that they are repinnable. If you get a few cylinders from different cars there is a great chance that you will end up with the pins you need to get a cylinder that opens with your key. Additionally most locks will operate with missing pins.

I'm positive that the dealer is just trying to take my money since I was able to get the cylinder from another one in the area, which is why I ordered all of the other ignition parts online (at a much lower price). I will avoid going to the dealer for anything whatsoever in the future after this incident, and have written a complaint to bmw na.

If the car ends up having EWS issues and I have to work to bypass it I'll let you know the details..
