Default What oil filter

Ok.. So I've run into an issue several times before where autoparts store give me the wrong oil filter...

On my car the oil filter is relatively small in diameter and taller. Where the filter that the autoparts store gives me is wider and not as tall, more squat.

So when I ask the people at the autopart store they tell me over and over again that the filter they gave me is for the 1.8l m42. Where as the filter that fits my car is a 1.9l m44 filter.

My car is definitely a 95, and definitely a 1.8l engine. Carfax, the original window sticker, everything says it is a 1.8l m42.

Did bmw start changing some of the parts on the late in the year 1995's? My car was produced in October of 1995.

last seven of the vin- AM53959

My oil filter housing does not look like this-
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...06&hg=11&fg=30

It looks like this-
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...68&hg=11&fg=30

Any clues?

l
short, yes. Absolutely correct. I am guessing you have a plastic oil filter cap that unscrews? Pre-sept 1995 have a metal lid, long bolt, and rubber o-ring to seal filter. ( i have a clubsport and it is oct. 95/ plastic lid; used to have a 94).

Cool.. Thanks for the fast response. I didn't know that they changed them, and after buying an oil filter yesterday it made my wonder why I also have to buy what the computer says is the wrong filter..

Yea, you will find a couple other parts that got installed late 95 that are actually 96 up. ACTUALLY the ti is a compilation of bmw parts over the years. ie. "2" doors yet 4 door front end, 2 door trim, 4 door style doors (2 doors have no upper part of the door) like subarus. Door opens window goes down- door closes windor goes up half inch) by the same switch in the ti's. Window motor on passenger side is driver motor on 2 door. Actuator (window lever) are their own creations unique to the ti. cost more at the dealer. Rear end all its own. I have never owned a e30 but i believe the dash is from that generation, along with the rear subframe...ect.ect.ect. But its all in good fun and all a learning experience.

speaking of oil filter.... wich one of you has a 98ti basic and a wrench to remove the oil filter cap. Im having a hard time at the parts store asking what kind it is. I need it to change my oil. Im going to change all the fluids on it, this weekend. If anybody knows, please tell me what size and how many flutes, thanks!

Bavauto.com has them...

"Cup design allows easy filter removal and installation from the end of the filter, even in tight locations. Use with 3/8" square drive. Fits 76mm Filters with 14 Flutes."

Just put in your year and Ti as the car, then search for this- Oil Filter Wrench.

Actually the rear suspension of the ti is not Z3. It's the opposite. The ti was introduced in 1994 while the Z3 was introduced one or two years later. The Z3 borrowed the rear axle of the ti. The rear axle is the shame in design with the E30s. But not even one part number is common!
And yes , the dash of the E30 has nothing to do with the ti's. They only have some common switches.

i would definately say that the dash is designed after the bmws of the 80's
look at the ebay listing above. If any one has seen a e36 318 and a e30 318 - you know that the ti is almost a copy of the e-30's E36's are known for the beautiful "waterfall" dashboard and its ease to access the switches.

Yes, just ask for an oil filter for a 96 ti and you should get the right one. Some parts stores will actually ask you if you have the plastic or aluminum cap. I just go to the BMW dealer and they give me the correct one (when I supply my VIN), and it is cheaper (or as cheap) as it as at the parts stores. I think it is $5 or $8, don't remember which. I think our BMW dealer in Cedar Rapids gives a 20 or 25% discount on parts though, they don't charge me the retail price it says in the computer. I just wanted to point out that the BMW dealer isn't always over priced.

Just buy a Mann Filter,it's the only filter you should use anyway.
