finally got new a-pillar covers as my old ones had all the tabs broken and were hanging. interior is whole again, and the factory anthracite matches the black felt i did the headliner with, so it all looks good.

also did some test fitting with the rear "coilover" springs and the style 65 rear wheels, the tires hit the stock fender lips at the height i want to run the rear of the car, so i'm working on getting those rolled. was more curious than anything as i hadnt tried the wheels with the new tires.

i actually did the headliner myself. less than $20 in black felt from jo-ann's fabrics, and a $14 can of 3m Hi-Strength 90 Adhesive were my material costs. a foam roller can help press the felt down but i didnt use it.

i thought i had some pictures of the process, let me see if i can find them

some pictures of the process. the basics are:
  • remove the headliner (unscrew everything then pull it out the hatch),
  • pull the old felt off the headliner,
  • use a coarse brush to get all the old foam/glue off (SUCKS and you get real dirty and it gets EVERYWHERE),
  • use old felt as a template (cut 5-10% larger to make it easy),
  • lay the new headliner down
  • d small sections at a time with the spray. it takes roughly 30 seconds i think to get tacky. so spray, wait, press down headliner.
  • work your way around, pressing out rolls and bumps
  • let it dry in the sun for a while. i left it for a day
  • install. yay. celebrate with a beer

Very nice!

I like how this seems very doable for a cheap price, a couple hours and good looking result.

Just added onto the list of "to-do", thanks!

was driving over the weekend and the temp gauge started creeping up. it occasionally did this when sitting for a while, but this was moving. pulled into a conveniently placed gas station and found that the rad had sprung a pinhole leak.

luckily my father in law has a downed ti so i was able to borrow his radiator until a new Behr arrives from autohausaz. removal/install is a 30 minute job, i love older BMW's!

I just noticed, how in the world did you get your headliner off without taking off the B-pillars? My headliner is sagging (again!) and I refuse to do the job again since I had to take the top half of the interior off, which included the B-pillars and rear door panels.

I believe i loosened the seatbelt anchor points and gently pulled the covers down a bit. the back was similar, undo the top anchor points (i think there are snap-in clips). then i slid the entire headline out through the hatch. its a pretty neat process when it works right. basically you slide the headliner past the b-pillar and c-pillar trim pieces. as you can see in the "removed" shot of the interior, the b-pillar covers are still present.
