Being a fan of the VW Golf variations in addition to the 318ti I did some research on why Volkswagen seems to have no interest in bringing the Scirocco to North America. This article pretty well explains it.

So let's not hold our breath waiting for a new 1-series replacement for our favorite car. This means that for a patient seller there are potential buyers who will pay dearly for a pristine older Scirocco, Golf, GTI or 318ti. Older Mini Coopers, too. We need to keep this in mind when trying to sell our cars. We will either find a potential buyer who falls in love with our cars because they are hatchbacks or one who would just as soon puke all over the roundel on the hood just because of its rear end. Don't be discouraged by the latter. FTR, I've had several younger folks who don't remember the 318ti show a great deal of interest in mine. A dealer suggested that a private sale should fetch $7500.00 Whaddya think of that?
