Default Transmission Swap (DONE!)

I swapped out my automatic transmission for a 5 speed this weekend. All in all, it took about 20 hours to do the entire swap including installing the Limited Slip differential. I didn't have any problems everything bolted right up.

If anyone is interested in doing this swap check out bimmerforums, they have a pretty long thread about it:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...ad.php?t=79886

I am very happy with the transmission. It is like having a new car, only better.

Can you provide some insight into the LSD install issues? Cali-T had problems getting things to line up, and needed grinding. I'd like a few opinions on what the real concerns are in doing a LSD swap. Did you replace halfshafts, and do the ABS sensor shim modification?

Thanks
Eric

Default LSD issues

I used an LSD for a 1995 Club Sport. I don't know if the e30 LSDs are difference than the e36 Club Sport LSDs. I had no issues installing mine. Dropped the old one out and put the new one back in. The only tip I have is to install the top 2 bolts first, then the 2 front bolts and after that put the "flex mount" bolt in. The only sensor I had on my diff. was the little speed sensor on the back. I'm not sure if that is the same sensor or not. I took the old one from my open diff. and put it in the new LSD diff.

Apparently there are a lot more e30 LSDs around, but I would say it would be worth looking for one from a Club Sport. I did not have to change half shafts. I paid $400 for mine.

I am still breaking in the clutch, so I can't do clutch kicks to get into a drift. I did do some no-clutch donuts in a parking lot and it was beautiful. The rear end is very predictable and stable. Well worth the money in my opinion.

dude that would be sweet if you moved to madison, I am on the wash all the time, A lot of people leave the Wash to go race which is usually infested in the g@y driving teams (team exceed, team groundassualt) as you will find out if you move here. there are some honda's here that I would love to see you spank, they multiply like rabbits and its getting out of control. there are a couple of people with bimmers here, E36 M3, 328, 330 and then me in my slow @ss convertible, it would be so sweet to have another 318 here in madison. hey keep me posted if you decide to move here.

BTW I dont recall seeing your friend on the wash but I will keep my eyes open.

I've been on Wash a few times, usually during the day. I caught a race with a crappy black Civic hatch that must have had a 200 hp shot of nitrous. I had him by about 2 car lengths at 40 mph and then I heard his tires break loose and he went flying by me, followed by a huge cloud of black smoke.

OMG are they ever, dude that mid engine CRX is crazy, my buddy is just starting his project, he is putting a supercharged VQ30DE (maxima motor) into a nissan 240sx, he decided to do this after he did his tranny swap in the maxima and couldnt get any traction untill third gear. and I am currently debating to either mod the bimmer or get started on my own procject, my buddy is basically giving me his 1984 fiat x19, its basically a mid engine go-cart that is street legal it weighs like 1500lbs and I am going to put a DSM turbo motor in it and mess around with the police doing mach 3 with my nuts on fire

Was that $400.00 with shipping? What was the mileage? Did you buy it from a guy on this site?

Thanks, we've been working on the CRX for almost 4 years now. When it's done you will see it in magazines, I guarantee it.

Alpine deck, it's a couple years old. I'm not sure what the model number is, but it is the one that angles our toward you. It fits the car and dash very well.
