Default Exhaust Question?

I am trying to figure out the best solution for my exhaust system for my engine conversion.

The engine is the M52 2.8 with the standard saloon headers.

I have a 323ti Eisenmann back box on order. (which is the same as the Z3 2.8 apart from the hanger are slightly different according to Eisenmann) This has a single 6" inlet.

The problem is I don't what is best for the mid section (with cats). I read that some people had used a Z3 2.8 mid section. Unfortunately this would be a very costly solution as the OEM mid section would be £900.00 and I can not return it if its wrong.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

I'm running the 3.2, and used the M3 cat and (highly modified) rear section in my car.

If you can get the original 2.8 car's cat, I'd give that a try first, or see the scrapper for a used one to try.

I got my hands on the entire exhaust system from my donor car (325is). The front section fits perfectly in the TI. The back section needed about 6-8 inches taken out, and hangers added to the muffler.

It actually went together pretty well.

don't know for the 2.8, but it might work with the 2.5 I am planning.

thanks for the replies guys,

Whatever system I make its going to need a Cat. In the UK cars over a certain age must have a CAT.

I have the mid section from the 328. Its not in great condition but I think I may have a go at modifying it with some Jetex pipes to fit. Depending on how this goes I can always buy a new 328 mid section and duplicate the modifications.

Trying to figure out the exhaust is probably the hardest part of the conversion. This is all a bit of a headache.

I agree: the exhaust is the worst part of the swap. Just about everything else is cake.

I am having a set of straight pipes made up from the cat-back to see how that sounds. There is just no room for a muffler under the ti with the M Roadster sub frame assembly. Everything is close to something else...

I'm cutting the stainless tips off the M3 muffler and welding them onto aluminized pipe from the cats. Probably in the spring at this point, as it could snow any day now up here...

Just for those that are thinking swap, I'll agree here as well that the exhaust is the worst.

It took me an entire day to retro fit a 325 dual exhaust on the ti, and honestly, I still don't like the rear section.

I maybe crazy but I am thinking: Ti Stromung exhaust to a Y mid-section(No Cat/No Resonator, just a track-pipe OR use the SuperSprint 323ti Mid-Section) and some excellent headers.

It maybe restrictive over a twin pipe exhaust, but it might be easier, but I like the look of the single 83mm tip of the stromung over alot of BMW exhaust.

After have problems with third party companies while building the kit car with my brother, I want to do as much work as possible myself.

On Sunday I bought a Z3 exhaust on ebay for a good price. I will see how it lines up at the weekend if it arrives this week.

I also received my Eisenmann back box on Saturday

What if you run it sideways like an e46 M3?
