Default BLOWN MOTOR, engine swap orstay stock?

I blew my engine in my 96 318ti the other day ago and was wondering what approach i should take to installing a new engine. I was given a quote of around $2500 or $3000 to get everything fixed. I was wondering whether i should just stick with the same m44 or take the option of throwing in a s52, m50 m52 or whatever. And if i were to throw in a six cylinder, which one would be the EASIEST AND CHEAPEST one to bolt up in a 96 Ti? If i were to swap i would try to keep everything stock such as the driveshafts gearbox and tranny etc.., due to the budget i have. is it possible that i would be able to stay under the $4000 dollar range swapping with a used six cylinder from a salvaged car or not? Im not looking for super high performance, but definitely some more power than my previous m44? My brother would be willing to help me out cuz he has swapped engines many a time but with chevys and toyotas. Some advice would be much appreciated
