Default want to build a FAST car, Suggestions ?

I would like to start this project in about 6 months,
Using a BMW as a base, Possible a 318ti or a wagon I would like to approach the 10 Sec 1/4 mile time,
Ive built cars which were in the mid 12s but mid 10s is another story.
What would be a reasonable combo for a,
1, Street legal and inspection legal car,
2, Quiet enough that regular driving isn't giving it away,
3, Good fir highway cruising at 80 MPH all day, So Reliable too.
4, Just plain scary fast.~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
While I don't know what I will have to spend, I figure it will be a 9 month build and I am hoping that this can be done in the 10K range figuring that a wagon or Ti will run be 2-3K and 7K into parts,
Can it be done?
Suggestions welcome,
Peter

Boost an ls engine with a 6speed. Or even an LM7 since you can get them cheaper.

OK,
There is also a place at 25th and Snyder in S. Phila.
Good idea.
Also I should add, Heat and AC and power steering should also still survive.

VAC Motorsports is the shop in south philly and mike yaskin has Bavarian Specialties in king of prussia......both are highly regarded bmw performance specialists. Check the delval bmw club website for more info on local shops.

just remember the performance triangle,, You may have Good, Fast, Cheap, Pick 2...

A 10 Sec BMW is going to eliminate the cheap option.

I figure that I will need about 500 HP.
Maybe the 4.4 V8 engine will give that to me with some work,
The V12 looks to be too much money for me,
Ill keep looking and gathering information,
The 540 wagon weighs a bit more than a Ti or a 3 series wagon,
But at least the engine is already in the car,
Now how to get 500 Ph from that 4.4 V8 ?

There is no way you'll get a 5 series wagon to do 10 seconds without gutting it down to just the essentials and slapping boost of major proportions on it, either a big ass turbo or monster blower, those things get up and go stock but 10 second 1/4 mile times are a whole different story.. If you want a 10 second drag car why not build a tube frame car and skin it with whatever look you're going for, ie a BMW skin..?

Want heat, AC, Leather and comfort,
Doing research I will need 1 Hp for every 6Lbs of car,
So 500 Horses says about 3000 lbs should do,
Granted a 540 wagon is about 3500 Lbs which brings me past a reasonable weight per Hp figure, I will need either more HP out of a 4.4 V8.
OR a 3 series car as the 318ti which is a measly 2700 Lbs.
~ ~ ~ ~
This is a project in the works and I should be ready to start in the winter,
For now gathering info is needed,
I see the Dinan 4.4s with super chargers generating near 400 Hp,
So a good turbo will make better power and Water meth may get me there,
Since I can't afford the V12,
Any other suggestions?
Peter

Pred---if you are serious about this research, as I stated in an earlier post, you should call bobby weaver at Prussian motors, to take advantage of his specific experience with high power bmw engines. he posts on this forum under the user name "bubela" and he has a number of posts describing the build of his car. you will also find one dated 9/30/12 where he shows a track time where he broke 11 seconds. he can talk with you about the various priorities that you have and how achievable they are. over and out.

Realistically speaking your best option is going to be along the lines of what Bluebimma said, get a LS1 or like engine slap some turbos on it and get a 6 speed. Getting that much power out of a stock BMW engine is gonna cost a fortune and a half
