Exclamation 98 318ti, new noisy water pump

Anybody heard of this problem?
I have a new water pump (remanufactured pumps from Napa) with metal impellers that squeal when the engine gets up to temp. I have replaced the pump several time and encounter the same results. One of the pumps was even a Bosch. It is hard to believe each pump is bad.

Before you ask:
1. Yes, the correct belt is installed
2. Yes the tensioner has been replaced, I even tried increasing and decreasing the pressure, no effect once the engine is hot.
3. Running Prestone antifreeze 50-50, added Prestone rust inhibitor/pump lubricant.
4. checked pulley alignment
5. Engine does not run hot, needle is centered. I wonder of the temp is to high/hot for these pumps despite what the temp gauge is indicating.
6. Fan comes on as expected.
7. Yes, the refill process was followed per the shop manual. I wanted to make sure there was fluid in the pump before starting the engine.
8. No antifreeze leaks

3/15/06 - I have pretty much eliminated the water pump in favor of the steering pump. I purchased a electonic-ear so I could try and isolate the noise. Detection of the noise is difficult because of the close proximity of the steering pump and the limited room to access this area with the engine running etc. Even with ear it is tough because of the echo effect around the running engine. The steering reservoir was down on fluid, adding fluid has muted the noise, hence the shift in focus. I am afraid the bearing is scored in the pump at this point although there are no rough spots or noise when turning it by hand. A replacement pump is spendy $260 so I am looking for rebuild kits. I may have found a kit at www.jonko.com/auto_parts for $36. I will try and let everyone know how this efforts addresses the problem.

The final resolution>>>>>>> This problem/noise was finally traced down the front crankshaft seal $5. Because this is located behind the balancer it was creating an echo which was very hard to trace. Had to believe a seal would make this noice, but that was the problem. What a pain this was.... Oh by the way you need a special tool to lock the crank and remove the balancer.

Is there any sign the impeller is dragging?

How long have you run it ? Long enough for the seals to break in?

Are you POSITIVE its the water pump and not the AC clutch bearings??

I didn't come up with these questions accidentally....

1. To the best of my knowledge the impeller is "not" dragging as I have turned the unit by hand and it feels free.
2. We have run the car on short (8-10 mile) trips around town for a two weeks. I am little concerned to take a longer trip until I have a better idea of what is causing this problem. I was hopping the noise would be related to a break-in period. I also wondered if the rubber seals were swelling when the unit gets up to temp, this would explain why the noise only seems to occur when the car is up to temp.
3. The belt for the AC unit was removed to help isolate the sound.
4. I even went so far as to clean and skuff all the pulleys to ensure they were not slipping.

Thanks for your thoughts.

How about a stethascope?

It sounds like "lucked out" and you have another issue that just happened to start
when you swapped the pump. How about alternator bearings? Power Steering Pump?
HMMM ,,,,

Anybody ever had a timing chain tensioner fail?? Whats it sound like?

Did this sound like a rattling coming from the pulley? Or was it a constant screeching like a bad fan belt?
