Default why are 318's always so "whiny"

Hey, has anybody figured out why 318's usually sound so whiny when running. I'm thinking maybe it is the p/s pumps. I'm not really talking about any specific problem with my car in particular but it seems like most 318's i've worked on or listened to sound whiny, espically at idle...

any thoughts to satisfy my curiosity?

It's just a small-displacement, high-strung motor.

BMW motors are often characterized as "raspy," especially the ones in the M3. Most high-performance builds sound this way, save for american muscle.

Default My whine has turned into a scream...

My neighbors say that they can hear my wife's 316i Compact screaming from two blocks away. So far I've repacked the bearings in the alternator, the two serpentine belt tension pulley bearings and now I'm attacking the power steering area.

I've just pulled the fluid expansion resevoir and back-flushed the filter therein. I'll put it back in tomorrow with a fresh ATF flush to see if that helps, before pulling the pump and rebuilding it.

It's been screaming for a couple months, doesn't seem to manifest a debilitating mechanical issue, so far just the noise. Problem is the annual inspection required to re-register the car, the garage won't sign off on the inspection with the noise so obviously demanding attention. The registration expired a couple days ago, so gotta get it fixed this weekend.

Definitely a whiney sound, very high-pitched and variable with engine speed. A lot like a supercharger as already facitiously suggested. In fact, that's what I told the two kids in the rice burner the other day who asked what the sound was while stopped at a traffic light. I think they believed me...

I just got a new Acc. Belt Tensioner for the P/S pump, I;m hoping that will take care of the whine/whistle while at idle.

Alot of the whine is because our motors have a metal chain DOHC timing belt.
