Default non-functional AT shifter lock

OK, after a valiant effort at searching and coming up empty:

The shifter lock on the underside of the AT handle is stuck in the up position. Some gentle banging on the shifter will get it to drop a bit, but it's clearly lost the spring return action. Anyone dealt with this, preferably cheaply? Car is a '96.

Yes, my 96 had the same problem. I removed the handle and shoved chunks of foam rubber under the button. From the factory they have an eraser like red foam that deteriorates and falls out. I fixed mine about 5-6 months ago and it's still working perfect.

Great idea! I stuffed some bits of carpet pad in there and, while it isn't perfectly springy, it's quite good enough. I checked the local boneyards and all similar handles I found had the same issue.

For anyone wanting a replacement handle, AutohausAZ has one (non-leather) for under $15. The OEM leather item from my local BMW dealer is $245...

Big thanks,

Curt

No problem, glad to help. I used some foam weatherstripping I had left over from some other project. Works good.

I didn't want to replace my nice leather shifter with plastic.
