Nice find thanks. My car is 97 ODBII. I heard it isn't difficult doing a ODBI to ODBII swap. At least that's what a shop said.

That's an illegal swap. You need to find an OBDII motor out of a '96-99.

Is that right? I wonder why this one shop was willing to put in a M42 into my 97.

They may be willing to do it, but that doesn't mean it's legal...

The emissions rules may vary from state to state, and I don't claim to know NY rules, but Cali rules state that for any swap then engine must be from the same model year or newer... I suspect that most municipalities would follow that rule.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's an EPA(federal agency) thing, not a state to state thing. However, whether or not your state conducts emissions inspections, you may or may not be able to get away with it. Personally, I wouldn't do it just because it's morally wrong(feel like it ruins the car, kinda like a salvage title). To each his own though, if it saves another nice and somewhat scarce 318ti(5spd-sport-cali-top) from getting parted out or junked, by all means do what you gotta do. I just think an S52, M52 or another M44 would be a much better option

Thanks for the advice guys. I'd like to do a straight six swap but I don't have the expertise to do it myself and having a shop do it would cost more than what I could afford right now. It looks like I found a M44 in Jersey so I should finalize the sale within this week!

I just need a reliable daily driver and I've wasted too much time already trying get my car running. I'm also concerned about the swap and the extra HP putting stress on the other drivetrain components.

I do have a beat up 95 ti with a leaking engine, maybe that'll be the candidate for a swap someday!

The beat up 95 happens to be a tracked Clubsport. So it still has shiny red paint but some stank ass interior. Other flaws that I don't care to mention but it's still my baby.

Seriously though, I wouldn't sell it for under $6k. That's what I paid for it.

I'm about purchase a motor and did a quick search on an engine swap here. Does the below apply to a M44 replacement on my ti? The EWS, ECU, computer?

"EWS -what I've learned

there are 3 points with EWS, each has a code which must match the other 2. Otherwise car won't start.

-key
-ews box, located under glove box, about 4" by 2" by 3"
-computer, ecu

The best route is to go to the dealership, BEFORE trying to crank it, or even messing with it.

I found that having people try to line up the EWS with inferior tools more then 1 time causes permanent damage to the ews box, which then no longer can be aligned. Then your new route is to get a key, ignition lock, ews box, and ecu, from a working and running car ~$450"

Most likely selling the whole car in non-running condition. Got an interested buyer coming to check it out. Motor was replaced but it is not getting any spark.

so, you need a key, ignition lock, ews box, and ecu, from a working and running car? what year do you need.. i have one form a 97 auto. everything for half that. $225 shipped.

how much for the whole car? a serious price though. 6k for a dead car is to much, even for a cali.
