Has anyone replaced an ignition switch? The chime is always on with no key and door open. If I spray contact cleaner in the switch (not the key) that sometimes clears it up. The other day the car wouldn't start at all. It's not a battery issue. Today the car started. I really think that the switch is tarnished. I'm thinking it'a fig 3 61328360925 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=32_2427 __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-05-2016, 03:07 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Simple replacement and you are correct on the part number. __________________ 01 740iS Cosmos Black 97 318ti Boston Green 99 318ti Titanium Silver 13 X5 3.5XDrive Cosmos Black 97 318ti Alpine White (gone but not forgotten) 88 325iC Schwartz Black (sold) 97 740iL Schwartz Black (sold) 84 633csi Schwartz Black (sold) 96 318ti Alaska Blue (sold) 08 X5 4.8i Titanium Silver (sold) | | | 06-05-2016, 09:32 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by 740isport Simple replacement and you are correct on the part number. | Thanks. Worked for a few days. Switch was bad because the chime doesn't when the door is open and no key in the ignition. Time to fix the window on my 96. Broken regulator. I got to get rid of these old cars. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org Last edited by 1996 328ti; 06-20-2016 at 03:11 AM. | | | 06-20-2016, 03:12 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | And today the car started. ?? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-20-2016, 10:59 AM | #7 | That's not Millpoint Blue Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: BNA Posts: 3,161 | I suspect that one of the spammers you banned might have some sort of a "voodoo doll" for your car. __________________ Real men know how to SEARCH! This morning the car wouldn't start. Get home from work, it starts! __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-21-2016, 06:36 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Its not a morning car? __________________ 01 740iS Cosmos Black 97 318ti Boston Green 99 318ti Titanium Silver 13 X5 3.5XDrive Cosmos Black 97 318ti Alpine White (gone but not forgotten) 88 325iC Schwartz Black (sold) 97 740iL Schwartz Black (sold) 84 633csi Schwartz Black (sold) 96 318ti Alaska Blue (sold) 08 X5 4.8i Titanium Silver (sold) | | | 06-21-2016, 07:57 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Quote: Originally Posted by 740isport Its not a morning car? | And.this morning.it started. ???? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-21-2016, 08:19 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2012 Location: SF Bay Area Posts: 315 | Well Damn! I'm wondering at this point is if you repaired one item (ignition switch) just to have another appear. It is almost seeming like a starter that is going out/dying. Had the same a while back, would crank/start then the same it wouldn't do anything! Replaced the starter and it was just fine. I'm not one to suggesting replace parts along the way to fix, but having your starter tested may not be a bad idea. __________________ 01 740iS Cosmos Black 97 318ti Boston Green 99 318ti Titanium Silver 13 X5 3.5XDrive Cosmos Black 97 318ti Alpine White (gone but not forgotten) 88 325iC Schwartz Black (sold) 97 740iL Schwartz Black (sold) 84 633csi Schwartz Black (sold) 96 318ti Alaska Blue (sold) 08 X5 4.8i Titanium Silver (sold) | | | 06-22-2016, 04:32 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I'm sure the ignition switch was bad because the chime would go on when the door was open and no key. I'd spray contact cleaner and fiddle with the wires and it would work normally. Since replacing the switch the chime has been working normally. I'm thinking the starter too but I was on a slight hill and I tried to pop the clutch to start the car. Didn't start but I wasn't moving very fast. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-29-2016, 04:57 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: Heber City, Utah Posts: 242 | Could be your antenna ring on the key cylinder that is going bad. Ews won't allow the car to start with no signal from that! | | | 06-29-2016, 12:34 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Any way to tell? __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 06-29-2016, 02:17 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: Heber City, Utah Posts: 242 | One of the codes you can pull from the diagnostic port lets you know if the dme is not getting that signal. I don't think it is an obd2 code. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Thread Tools | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
