Normally, the top of the beam cut-off should be equal height to the lens at the car.

So, like 10 feet away, on a flat surface, the top of the cut off should be the same height as the lens on the car.

Not scientific, but at least you won't get a ticket. It is POSSIBLE the dealer can align them for you, although e36 is antique to them now...

sadly Unmitza told me last week on the phone that ZKW and Bosch e36 headlights have been discontinued, permanently. so they are going to become much more difficult (and expensive) to find, presumably.
