Fellow Bmw owners, mechanic? motor head?,(I am not)
I am looking for a little help in regards to a noise in my 1996 bmw 318ti. It has 186,000 miles & runs great, but it whines (maybe like crickets at night)& is louder when engine is warmed up /hot. Seems like is dissapates some when gas is applied. After warm, when you turn the engine off it continues to make the noise for maybe 3-4 seconds long... like saying EEEEeeeeeeee... till it ends. pretty noticable as my wife says "she can hear me coming"!!
I have a local "american car" mechanc/friend that has found a few vacum leaks in the exhaust /maniflod area & says the noise may be the "bearings" going in the water pump... Sound right? If so, should I replace the fan clutch as I have heard on some of the chat?
I want to try to give him some additional diretion to look as I really don't want to take it to a BMW dealership.
I appreciate any comments/directions from anyone else out there...
thanks again, Jayzer
