I was wondering if anyone has put one in a ti. I have an s50 swap right now. Thanks Lee | | | 04-15-2010, 06:56 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | It's been talked about in the past, but I don't know if anyone's actually done it. Physically it should fit with no problems and bolt right up. You may end up with weird final drive ratios unless you also change the diff. | | | 04-15-2010, 07:04 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: LA, Bellflower, CA Posts: 3,613 | there might be only 1 euro swap done so far. there is a euro build thread somewhere. but not many ppl have had the oppportunity to do so since the 6 speed tranny can be expensive to find and part together. from what i can remember reading i think ppl used a 3.38 diff ratio for a speed but not sure. __________________ -Theta Chi- Float like a cadilac, sting like a BIMMER .... my socket is just too thick and won't fit in the hole! damnit! I think it is a 3.73 at about 80 i am around 4000rpm. So its quite high. This trans will just give me an over drive. The first 5 ratios are the same. I am quite excited to get this running and i wont feel so bad about driving my car on the free way without accessive engine rpm. The only thing i am wondering is the driveshaft. The euro M3 has a CV joint at the back end to mount to the diff. Of course I do not have this. I guess we will see! I will try my hardest to make a diy when i do it. | | | 04-15-2010, 07:16 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Austin, TX Posts: 80 | Do have a model number on that tranny? | | | 04-15-2010, 07:23 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: detroit Posts: 157 | | | | 04-15-2010, 07:24 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: detroit Posts: 157 | any help would be great! | | | 04-15-2010, 08:32 PM | #8 | Moderator Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: SoCal318ti Posts: 1,574 | The 6 speed tranny swap was common back in 2000, it was expensive and if my memory serves right, it was in the $3.5k price range. You should not have issues and how much was this beuty? | | | 04-15-2010, 08:59 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Cincinnati Posts: 890 | The driveshaft will not working with the TI diff. Six bolt drive shaft and only a four bolt diff. 3.73 is still a bit short, but its all personal preference. The car that trans came out of from BMW was probably a 3.23 or 3.15. Everything else will bolt up fine. __________________ SOLD!!! 1999 332ti //M Sport Titanium Silver M3 S52 3.2 I-6 Engine, M3 Clutch w/ ti Getrag Trans, Z3 3.15 LSD medium case diff and half shafts, OEM Hatch Spoiler, Eurosport HP Underdrive Pulleys, FDM, 17" DS1 rims, M3 Front Struts & Springs, M3 Instrument Cluster, 3-spoke //M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, SSK, CCFL Angels in Depo projectors with 5k HIDs Last edited by campaiar; 04-15-2010 at 09:03 PM. | | | 04-15-2010, 10:02 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: detroit Posts: 157 | I understand that the driveshaft will not fit. I was wondering what people did to over come this issue. | | | 04-16-2010, 06:43 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: detroit Posts: 157 | i think my best plan is to use my current driveshaft and have it shortened (front half). I found that it uses the same flex disk as a US m3 but the trans is roughly 4" longer. I wonder if there is a market for a euro M3 drive shaft with the rear CV joint? | | | 04-16-2010, 09:28 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | I looked up the ratios in the 6 speed before. I believe they are almosy identical to the 5 speed thru the first 5 gears, and that 6th is an overdrive gear. If it were me, I would leave the final drive ratio the same (3.45) if you had a M42/44 engine. For the M50, I would go with what the 6 cyl cars had. This would make the car feel the same, except when you need that higher ratio on the highway. If anything, you should be able to use the front half and rear ti shaft, have it balanced. Otherwise, id convert to a single shaft rather than dual shafts. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 04-16-2010, 11:36 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: detroit Posts: 157 | I have a 3.73 diff right now and i love it. I just feel bad if i drive on the freeway at 80mph i am at like 4000rpm. You are correct by saying that all the ratios are the same as the 5 speed i have and the 6th gear is a 0.83:1 (5th is 1:1) so this will fix my high rpm on the free way as well as keeping the fast accel! The euro drive shaft doesnt have that lock nut to join the 2 ends together its just a spline, so i couldnt mix and match the my current rear half with the euro front half. So i think i will just use my current drive shaft and chop 4 inches off the front half and get it rebalanced. I am very excited to get it in!!! | | | 04-17-2010, 12:46 AM | #15 | Member Join Date: Jan 2010 Location: usa Posts: 80 | I installed the six speed transmission on my ti back in 03. I purchased it from Bimmer World in VA. I was in contact with James Clay. He is still there. They sold me the complete package. Transmission, Rear cross mount, custom made drive shaft and shift linkage. I also replaced several parts since I had to drop the transmission. I replaced the clutch disc, throw out bearing, Pilot bearing, pressure plate, slave cylinder, rear engine oil seal, transmission mounts and drive shaft coupling. I had to extend the wiring for the reverse light switch and modify one bracket mounted to the transmission. Since the six speed transmission was used I replaced all the transmission seals and the reverse switch. James Clay will guide you along the way if you have any fitment issues.
