Default Polishing Stock Rims

I have a 97ti with the stock 5point star rims. They were factory chromed but the chrome is flaking off badly. I don't have the cash for new rims so I was thinking of having the chrome stripped and maybe getting the wheels polished. Has anybody done this? Is the metal used in the stock wheels capable of being polished? Thanks for your help.

I believe the only way you will remove the chrome is to blast it with glass bead. This will leave a slightly coarse finish which would take alot of effort to polish. If there is a way to remove the chrome without disturbing the surface of the alloy wheel they could be polished, but I definitely would not try polishing them by hand.
