SC Posts: 344 | Replacing Rubber Anyone ever replaced the rubber seal that you can see between the doors and the rear windows? Mine has been cracking for quite awhile, especially around the rear windows. | | | 04-17-2005, 04:26 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: UK Doncaster S Yorks Posts: 33 | RIght, this isn't easy. Im almost convinced it involved replacing the whole window as there is a large this strip (behind the black part on the window) which is firly glued on. I figured the cracking seals weren't a big deal so i cut them off and i like in the uk (where rain was invented) and no problems to report. | | | 04-17-2005, 04:38 PM | #3 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | can you find this part in the ETK ( www.realoem.com/bmw - put in the last 7 digits of your VIN)? if so, post a link to the diagram that shows it. i'm not sure what you're referring to (especially since i'm away from my car). __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-18-2005, 04:07 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Virginia Posts: 368 | I'm pretty sure he must be talking about the whole rear window seal. It's cracking on mine, too, and it's so hard it creaks against the door. Is it item #12 on this photo?: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...47&hg=51&fg=05 | | | 04-18-2005, 04:20 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Fig 4 is cracking on my car. I have a set ready to be installed but I think I'll replace the plastic bushings and glue my door panel all at the same time. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 04-18-2005, 08:12 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Virginia Posts: 368 | Aha! I think I'll go with #1 in Steven's graphic. -Phil | | | 04-21-2005, 10:57 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Posts: 91 | My #1/#9 is cracked and part is hanging loose between the door and the back window at the base of the windows. I was thinking of using hot glue? maybe somthing you guys could recommend to repair. #1/#9 was like 115 at dealer, expensive and looks difficult to install | | | 04-21-2005, 11:38 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2004 Location: Virginia Posts: 368 | I've revisted the ETK and am no longer sure the part that's turning to crap on my car is even listed separate from the rear window. The part #1 in Steven's diagram is not like that on my car in that the vertical portion only descends about an inch. The forward part of the window gasket that contacts the rearward edge of the door is part of the entire rear-window-glass surround. On the film it shows a gasket listed as "edge protection"—which I assume is the gasket on the car body—but lists the glass itself as "with gasket". Hmmm. Anyone replaced the piece I'm talking about? | | | 04-22-2005, 02:09 AM | #9 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | phil ... are you talking about the edging that moves with/is part of the rear window and not the seal (#12 in diagram of rear window) that remains with the rear body when you open the window? if so, i agree, it appears it's only available as part of the rear window __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-22-2005, 02:41 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | i have this same problem, but i suspected it to be a problem that my brother never conditioned the rubber, not a general failure. i plan on using some black silicone to reattach it; hopefully it won't look like crap. | | | 04-22-2005, 02:46 AM | #11 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | i just hooked up with some gummi pflege and need to go to town on all my seals one of these days. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 05-04-2007, 05:32 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Shelton, CT Posts: 154 | How can replaced the seal of the window?
