Default Replacing Rubber

Anyone ever replaced the rubber seal that you can see between the doors and the rear windows? Mine has been cracking for quite awhile, especially around the rear windows.

RIght, this isn't easy. Im almost convinced it involved replacing the whole window as there is a large this strip (behind the black part on the window) which is firly glued on. I figured the cracking seals weren't a big deal so i cut them off and i like in the uk (where rain was invented) and no problems to report.

can you find this part in the ETK (www.realoem.com/bmw - put in the last 7 digits of your VIN)? if so, post a link to the diagram that shows it. i'm not sure what you're referring to (especially since i'm away from my car).

I'm pretty sure he must be talking about the whole rear window seal. It's cracking on mine, too, and it's so hard it creaks against the door. Is it item #12 on this photo?:

Fig 4 is cracking on my car. I have a set ready to be installed but I think I'll replace the plastic bushings and glue my door panel all at the same time.

My #1/#9 is cracked and part is hanging loose between the door and the back window at the base of the windows.

I was thinking of using hot glue? maybe somthing you guys could recommend to repair.

#1/#9 was like 115 at dealer, expensive and looks difficult to install

I've revisted the ETK and am no longer sure the part that's turning to crap on my car is even listed separate from the rear window. The part #1 in Steven's diagram is not like that on my car in that the vertical portion only descends about an inch. The forward part of the window gasket that contacts the rearward edge of the door is part of the entire rear-window-glass surround. On the film it shows a gasket listed as "edge protection"—which I assume is the gasket on the car body—but lists the glass itself as "with gasket". Hmmm. Anyone replaced the piece I'm talking about?

phil ... are you talking about the edging that moves with/is part of the rear window and not the seal (#12 in diagram of rear window) that remains with the rear body when you open the window? if so, i agree, it appears it's only available as part of the rear window

i have this same problem, but i suspected it to be a problem that my brother never conditioned the rubber, not a general failure.

i plan on using some black silicone to reattach it; hopefully it won't look like crap.
