Default Need advice about cat converters

Hi guys,

Just failed CA smog check, NOX and CARB where over the roof. My car is a '95 Ti base, no check engine on, and it seems to run very well (maybe just a little low in gas mileage). I spent some time reading various tread about this topic and I'm going to try everything I read, like new air filter, new spark plugs, throttle body cleaning, foam etc. Then if it'll not pass I'll try o2 sensor and cat.
My understanding is that with ODB1 cars like mine an aftermarket cat converter should work right, problem with not oem cats are with ODB2 cars, is that right?
Anyway any other advice on what to do will be appreciated. (I'm kinda newbie)

Thanks, Luca.

i have a cat for sale, Im asking $300. its OEM. you can weld up the Post-cat sensor hole up since its for a OBD-II set up.
i can throw in the pre-cat sensor for $110, less than what i paid for it. :-/

For OBDI cars they (at least in MD) put the collector over the exhaust and put the car on the dyno to simulate driving. On OBDII cars the post cat sensor takes the place of needing to test the exhaust. So even if you get an aftermarket cat, they will still test the exhaust. An aftermarket may or may not pass. They usually don't.

Thank you for your replies.
I'll see what is the problem. Bad news if the aftemarkets don't pass Marv I'll let you know if I need the cat. For now I'll try the basic things and I'll see.

Thanks guys.

I have a cat too I'm looking to dispose: I replaced the failing OEM with an aftermarket Miller core (it is one of the few cors that are CARB approved). I recently replaced it with OEM: the pipings were not bent correctly and the resonator was hitting the heat shield. That aside, the core it's working fine so I can sell it to you and a muffler shop can do the welding...

I'm in Oceanside, so you can just come and pick it up...

I replaced mine in my 1995 Sport with a DEC aftermarket and have passed PA emissions for two years. We'll see how I fare this year, but it seems to be holding up.

I replaced mine with a http://www.tenneco.com/ bolt on cat. Passed smog and no cel. It rattles like crazy tho. I'm considering getting an OEM from dealer unless I can find one on here.
