There is a metal rod that connects the 2 front wheels (it has other connections too) which is spirally shaped towards the end (with higher diameter) on either side ( I mean close to the wheel). There is a leak from the spirally shaped part on the left side. I am not sure what that is. is that a oil leak or coolant leak or some fluit ? no idea | | | 11-09-2009, 11:09 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | It sounds like you are describing the tie rod that goes into the wheel spindle. If it is the tie rod then when the boot tears the grease inside will leak out. What color is the fluid that is leaking? Can you take a picture? __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 11-09-2009, 11:22 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Boston Posts: 28 | i dont know the exact color. leak leaves a black spot wherever I park the car | | | 11-09-2009, 11:48 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's an oil filter housing leak and dripping on the steering rack... but a picture would help a lot. | | | 11-09-2009, 11:56 PM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Boston Posts: 28 | thanks. i will try to post the pic tomorrow | | | 11-10-2009, 12:32 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | Also take a picture of the front of your engine, ok? | | | 11-10-2009, 03:47 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Boston Posts: 28 | | | | 11-10-2009, 04:59 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | That looks like a power steering fluid leak. Have you had to top that off? I hope you are aware that these cars use Dextron III / Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) in the power steering. Try wiping down the wet hoses and keep a close eye on it for a bit. This way you can get a better look at where the leak is starting from. Also look above the PS pump and see if something else is dripping on it. One more thing... does the fluid on the hoses look and smell like motor oil? Atf is red. You can see it clearly if you wipe it off with a white paper towel. A common failure when it starts getting cold is the oil filter housing Oil can drip down from there, too. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | Similar Threads | Thread | Thread Starter | Forum | Replies | Last Post | Oil Leak | Sosebee | Maintenance | 3 | 06-11-2009 07:58 PM | HELP oil leak | tol4o | Engine | 12 | 04-22-2008 03:43 AM | Oil leak | punchesdfw | Maintenance | 10 | 11-23-2006 09:00 PM | oi leak | 96ti | Maintenance | 2 | 03-05-2006 10:08 PM | Another leak... | bmwpwr | Maintenance | 0 | 05-24-2005 03:12 PM | |
