Default Valve seals?

I just bought a 96 Ti with 180k. The motor threw a rocker arm and broke the exhaust cam. No valves were damaged and i have purchased the nec. parts to fix the issue. The head is super clean and the PO said it never used oil or smoked. I believe him as he believed we were going to replace the motor anyway.

So do M44 engines usually need valve seals? I was considering changing them but my mechanic said its not needed really as he never saw them fail and without a total head rebuild whats really the point. So would i put them in. I will probably replace the motor in the next year or so with a lower mileage one if the project goes as planned. Id just like to drive it for awhile before the PA road salt comes......

I have not heard a lot about valve seals going bad. So the motor pushed a rocker arm to the side right? Did the cam break or is it just damaged where the rocker torn up the cam lobe surface.

I've heard of rockers going to the side but then they fall off the valve spring and stay away from the cam. I would look real close at the valve retainer and valve assemble on that one that kicked to the side and ensure it is not a bigger issue then what you think.

Usually when one rocker is not on the cam lobe and valve it is due to a bad assembly of the rocker assembly.

Best of luck, John S
