Default fuel capacity

my car didn't come with the owner manual so i ventured online to find out that our cars hold 13.7 gallons....the odd part is last night i was in the reserve with 40 miles to empty (so about 2 gallons or so left) and yet i topped off 13 1/2 gallons....what's up with that? by the way my car is a `95.

I don't have my manual in front of me but I think it says the tank is 13.7 plus a reserve tank(?) of 2 gallons.

The distance to empty is not all that accurate when it gets really low like that. I have a '95 and the manual states 13.7 gal, nothing about a reserve. I drove into a gas station with the needle buried, and I mean buried, on E, and put in 13.9. So I think the tank holds 13.7 and the filler tube holds about .3

I certainly could be wrong, next time I think of it, I'll go look in the manual

Tanks on the Ti's and Z3's are supposed to be 13.5 gallons.

I dont know about the reserve; looks like we have some mixed results being posted here.

OK, I've got my manual in front of me.

"Fuel Tank...... approx. 13.7 (gallons)......

including reserve capacity of...... approx. 2.1 (gallons)"

Edit: unless that 2.1 gallon reserve is a part of the 13.7 gallon tank????

well the reserve in cars is part of the tank....reserve means when the warning light goes on usually for most cars or so it is for my moms `04 jetta tdi....so that would make since that i put 13 1/2 gallons in when i had appx. 2 or so gallons left! so technically we have 15.8 gallon tank but of course you don't want to run it that low seeing you can suck up sediment off the bottom of the tank and you would be putting a heavy strain on your fuel pump.

No, it says including reserve capacity of 2.1. This is not on top of the 13.7. About 2.1 gal left is when the low light comes on.

Yeah that makes sense, but 13.7 + 2.1 gallons = 15.8 gallons.

15.8 gallons equals 59.8 liters and the ETK says our tanks are 60 liters.

Honestly, I'm confused

Huh, you might be right then! Anyone care to run their car until it runs out of gas?

I have a VW Caddy 06 that has a 60L tank according to the owners man, I use a work fuel card and have a game i play to see how low i can get it before running out of fuel...

I one day managed to get to 60.9L on the fuel pump + what ever was in the tank. When i said it to the cashier they mumbled something about accounting for air...
