Default 280whp goal

I currently drive a DASC'd '95 clubsport. Love the car but I'm coming from a modded 335xi and want a bit more power.

My goal is to make 280whp on a FI 4 cylinder. I'm assuming I'm going to need to go turbo.

Other than forking over huge bucks and getting a VAC or metric motorsport engine to work off of what are my options?

I feel like this shouldn't be too difficult, lots of 1.6-1.9 liter motors make that kind of power with mid sided turbos.

Am I missing something simple? I'd like to try to keep this around $5k.

I have a friend who's making insane power from his 4 cylinder M44. I think he's running E85 fuels and about 30PSI boost.

If you want another 4 cylinder option for lightweight, you could build up a S14 2.5L turbo. My mechanic currently has one on his E30 M3 track car running on 105 octane race fuels. He's making more power than my 6 cylinder 2.8L M52 18 PSI turbo. I'm currently making roughly 430rwhp.
