I am not sure if I am using the site correctly, this are the results I got from RealOem.com

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref....ur=&series=E36

Those results are a little confusing to read. if you click on the one that says Auto you'll notice the part number in the diagram is different. That DS is used on 96-99 M3 convertible & sedan and 10/96+ coupes w/ manual trans only. should be the kind w/ 4 bolt swivel joint on the back according to the diagrams.

I tried buying 2 online and each time I provided the part number to the seller to verify they stated it was not compatible. I am really confused and can't get answers anywhere. Most people say that 98's have different parts than 97's and many other BS.

I dunno, I use BMW ETK (same as realoem) for my parts fitment information. Most junkyards don't know very specific information about their parts other than what it came out of. Don't buy one from a 5 series or 7 series. Get one from a manual 328 and verify by photo that it has the correct rear flange. or an M3 and again verify the rear flange.

what should I look for on the rear flange, and are the 328 and m3 the same part, length ?

lets see...328 is 1492mm and M3 w/ swivel joint (not 6 bolt CV joint kind) is also 1492mm length. They are not the same BMW part number. I suppose the M3 one might be a little heavier duty?

You want a 4 bolt swivel joint (also called a U joint) on the back.
