Im gonna check them out this weekend if I have the time. Or maybe I'll find a body under there................. | | | 10-01-2005, 03:39 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | the differential will grind/chatter when going around turns. you could always swap the fluid and check for metal bits (easy, and reccommended) it could also be a wheel bearing or cv joint. i think the rear bearing is easy to replace, and the front one is difficult. it could be the other way around though. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 10-01-2005, 04:24 AM | #5 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | depends on what part of the diff is failing. ring and pinion will whine - noticeably changes under load and with different speed. do you have an open or limited slip diff? i would check the fluid level for sure and change it if you haven't for a good while. thought the front wheel bearings were sealed. therefore the rears should be changeable. check realoem.com to see if the replacement parts are available. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 10-01-2005, 06:25 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: MD/VA/DC Posts: 834 | it can also be coming from your tiresi replaced my tires and i have a humming too | | | 10-06-2005, 05:30 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: PA Posts: 822 | It turns out that I need to replace my CV joints. Does anyone know a good place to buy them for a reasonable price? I found them for 130.00 a piece at a local shop. | | | 10-06-2005, 06:12 PM | #8 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | is that for the cv joints or the whole halfshaft? never replaced a cv joint before so i don't know how much work that is. you could probably get used halfshafts for less than that (but of course you don't know how much mileage is on them typically). bmw rebuilt halfshafts will likely be around $260 each. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 10-06-2005, 06:49 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: PA Posts: 822 | Quote: Originally Posted by cali-ti is that for the cv joints or the whole halfshaft? never replaced a cv joint before so i don't know how much work that is. you could probably get used halfshafts for less than that (but of course you don't know how much mileage is on them typically). bmw rebuilt halfshafts will likely be around $260 each. | Its 130 for a rebuilt halfshaft. I thought that was a pretty good price. | | | 10-14-2005, 06:48 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: PA Posts: 822 | So I am stressed the **** out. The place I originally ordered the half shafts didn't have them in their warehouse, their computers said they did but they weren’t actually in their warehouse. So My dad called up Bavarian Engine Exchange last week, they had them and said they would be delivered within 7 business days. I called them today and they haven’t even shipped them and they said they will ship sometime next week. That place ****ing sucks ass. Does anyone else know of a place that has rebuilt half shafts? I really need to get my car back on the road this weekend. Though that is most likely impossible at this point. I've been driving my stepfathers 93 VW Passat that has 234,500 mile on it. The problem is that I commute 160 miles a day and I don't want to drive the Passat more than I have to. Plus he has to have my mom drive him to work everyday and I’m sure that is getting old. I can't afford that. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
