Default 318ti power from a 316?

Hey,

Still on the look out for a tidy ti, man they are rare. one in the trader friday night, provisionally sold to someone else by sat lunch!!!

Anyways, looking through the paper tonight and there was a 316 new shape compact for sale, and i was wondering how easy is it to get 140brake from it. They both have 1.9 litre engines, so how do they achieve the power difference? WIth a turboed car one could chip it and easily up the power, but normally aspirated cars normally need a fair bit of work to realise any decent power gains.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thank you in advance.

hi nigel,

by new shape, you mean e46?
if you do mean the e46, the 316 has a 1.9 litre engine where as the e36 316 has a 1.6 litre engine. and if you are looking at e46's you can certainly afford a really nice e36 318ti.

there shouldnt be a big difference between the 36 and 46 hp outputs as they have the same engine.

either that or i have got completely the worng end of the stick.

The 316 has a 1.8L motor, about 115hp.

Unfortunately, we didn't get that motor nor body style (E46) in the states, so help may be thin here.

The main difference between the two is that the 316 has a SOHC engine as opposed to the 318ti having the DOHC engine. Although they are the same size engine, they are built with very different charactheristics.

Rob,
DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam) engines are typically considered better than SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) engines, do to having more valves and independent intake/exhaust camshafts.

i cant really afford a new shape (e46) compact, it was just one that i saw and the thought of having one tempted me to look again. I didnt know the new 316 was still sohc. If it is, then that will be a big difference in power and insurmountable by "cheap" tuning.

Thanks for your replies though.
