a manual transmission has a fluid that needs to be drained just like an automatic transmission? if so, is there a filter or is it just a drain and refill procedure?

You're lucky with a manual transmission; it's simple, plus there's no filter. Remove the fill plug first*, then remove the drain plug and drain the fluid. Put the drain plug back in a tighten to spec. Use a fluid pump to pump about 1.1 quarts back in to the transmission. When fluid spills out of the fill plug, it's full. Replace and tighten the fill plug to spec. The fluid pump is available from any part store.

Here's the procedure for an E46 325i which has essentially the same transmission as the 318ti. http://www.bmw325i.net/maint_tran_fluid.shtml
For some reason the pics on the site aren't working right now.

* Remove the fill plug first just in case you strip the fill plug trying to remove it AFTER you drain all the fluid. There'd be no easy way to refill the transmission.

If you look at the link I posted there are pictures of the fill and drain plugs on the transmission. You should search to find answers about the ATF, there is a lot of discussion about this topic.

The M44 gear box should get MTF2 oil... Thats a spesial oil made of BMW for BMW!
I used a normal oil like Royal Purple Synchromax i think, at first... Then it started beein more and more rough... so i went to the BMW workshop I worked at and bought 1,5l of MTF2 ( Manual Transmittion Fluid v2... its a upgrade of MTF1 thats not sold anymore )... After draining out the gearfluid that was already on (not old fluid) and filled up with MTF2, I took a short drive, and It was smooth again!

Yeah, on manual its just to drain it off, and refill the new fluid... I think the Autos got a filter...

Edit, the M44 gear box just need 1,2L of gear oil i think, not sure... but its not more than 2L thats for sure!

I use redline MTL. Never had any problems, and my transmission is much smoother after switching to RL-MTL than when I was running the stock BMW fluid. I would imagine that probably has more to do with clean fluid vs. old fluid.

Synchromax is a transmission fluid, max gear is a gear oil. I used the synchro in my trans and the 75w-90 gear oil in my diff.

Yeah the trans fluid goes in the transmission.

Gear oil goes in the rear differential.

There are lots of threads about it if you search these forums.

I started out using Ron Stygar's site. He's very thorough, but some of the pictures have gone the way of the buffalo.
