Default New Member Intro - Keeping it in the Family

Hello Everyone! I come from the E46 M3 corner of the BMW fandom, and my current car is a 2002 Laguna Seca Blue 6-speed. I also have a 1988 320i Touring that I exported from Germany back to the US. I am an mechanical engineer who has a real appreciation for engines and suspension setups.

The reason I am here is because in a few weeks I will be picking up my uncle's 1997 318ti. At this time all that I know about it is:

-It has 325,000 miles on it. He bought it CPO at 13,000 miles (!!!).
-It is a manual transmission.
-He is "unable" to register it due to some state inspection issue. My guess is cats with that mileage but I will find out.

He's done messing with it and said if I haul a trailer out to his out a few hours away, it's mine. My plan is to get it registered and enjoy it as long as that motor will last with maintenance. It will be my corner carving track toy. Maybe there will be an engine swap down the road, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it and only if the 1.9 in there gives up the ghost. I kind of want to see just how many miles I can extract out of the little beast.

I will post pictures and more details of the car here as I get them. Anyway, I attached some photos of my current M3 and the Touring for your time. Looking forward to learning from and discussing the car with all of you!
