Default Autozone starter?

What do you think of the $125 Duralast import starter with a $62 refundable core charge? Is it worth trying it out?
My daughter's 1996 with 210kmiles has a starter that has started turning really slow. I cleaned all the battery connections and engine ground but still turns really slow. It used to turn over really fast.
Thanks.

Is the battery healthy?

I can get you a BOSCH starter for not that much more money.

Battery is 2 years old and has 12.8 volts engine off, 13.5 volts engine running.

How much for a Bosch starter and where?

Seems reasonable.

How do you handle the core? Do I have to pay the core first then get a refund when you get my old starter?

I picked up one from O'Reilly's about 2 years ago. Hasn't let me down yet. I don't remember the brand, however. Like the other guy said, if you can get a Bosch starter for less, do that.

FWIW, starters are interchangeable on all e36's 4 & 6 cylinder. In '97 they threaded the mounting holes on the starters which made it much easier to remove. The earlier models had a nut which was a PITA to get a wrench on. So if you can, try to get a newer model.

...and since R&R on a starter for these cars is kind of a bitch anyway, buy a quality starter and you're not replacing it again next year.

Take a picture of the wire orientation. And don't take the intake manifold off, go from the bottom.

That's what I'm planning to do but it developed a vacuum leak. The idle tkes a long time to drop like from 1500 rpm to 800 rpm, but it is still hunting a little bit. I opened the hood and can hear a vacuum hiss from under the intake. Where could this vacuum leak be from? I was thinking maybe from the injector hoses?

I may have to take the manifold off.

CCV's are know to hiss when they fail. It's located right behind the intake manifold, should be a black disc shaped plastic part. With the engine running, locate the CCV and place your finger underneath it. Feel around for an air slot on the bottom of the part. Hear the hiss change pitches? If so, replace the CCV.

Trust me, you don't want to take the manifold off. And removing the manifold isn't going to help find a leak anyway. It's not like you're going to have the engine running with the manifolds off. The best way to find a vacuum leak is with brake cleaner. Start the engine, spray brake cleaner on and around all of the vacuum hoses. Listen for the RPM's to rev up. Once you hear the idle fluctuate, you've found your leak. Continue spraying brake cleaner until you're able to identify the source.

I think you are right, the hiss is right behind the intake manifold. Now I have to deal with the starter and the CCV. Where do you guys get the CCV?
