Default '95 318ti Starting Problem

Guys

My 95 318ti has a starting problem. I turn the key and the lights/radio come on but that's it. The issue isn't the battery. There is no 'click click click' noise either. The engine literally never gets the 'message' to atleast try starting.

Anyone have an idea what this could be?

Thank you

Make sure it's not the battery. When mine went the lights and radio worked, but the car didn't click or turn over slowly like my other cars would.
Try a jump start.
Then try a roll start.
If neither of them work... post a reply here.

Default Dont think its the battery

Dave,

Cheers for the response.

I don't think it's the battery. I did jump-start the battery and it really didn't change anything.

It's like there's not a connection between the ignition and the engine ??

Not sure if it's the starter or maybe a connection into the starter perhaps.

Appreciate your answers

Did it run fine the last time it was on and running? I would say it is the starter. Check it out and see if you can see any visible problems like a connection or anything. Also have somebody try to crank the car while you watch and listen to the engine. Hope this helps some.

I bet you it's a fuse. Look for a blown 15 amp for the rear brakes.

Default Starter &/or fuzes

Guys appreciate the responses so far. I haven't had a chance to try these options (car is at work in a garage) but am going over there tonight. Should I just buy a new relay? Hoping that is the problem? How do I test to know if it's the relay, starter, or a fuze? I mean the fuze is relatively easy and cheep .... i guess same with the relay, huh?

Anyone know exactly where the relay for the starter on a 95 318ti is?

Thanks

Default YES it did run fine

Will - yes the car ran fine last time it was on. It's like some ghost just came and took my bimmer's life and left me with a radio and electricity!

1.Pick up a fuse pack from any gas station
2. Open hood
3. Locate Fuse Block next to the driver side hood shock, remove cover,
4. Locate the blown by looking for yup, a blown fuse.
I believe this is your problem. Do not buy a relay.

Checked every single fuze and relay (I think its the cartridge looking things in the fuze box) all tested fine. So its not that ... Wth can it be? Starter ? Alternator?

Maybe one of them was loose or something and by pulling it out and putting it back in could have made a better connection. Either way your car is running and that is the best part.

Default Starter RELAY

Guys

Did a test this weekend. It's the starter relay. Getting a new one.

For all 318ti'ers out there make sure your fuzes are all ok. This car has 175K miles on it.

Thanks

My car has a 171k miles on it. Maybe I should just go ahead and buy all new fuses and replace them all now. Would be cheap and prevent any of them blowing for awhile.

Thumbs up Hey Will ....

I'd check your starter relay, water pump, ball bearings, hoses, and change sparks plugs. Another thing - add lucas il stabilizer next time you change your oil.

These are things that have happened in the last year that i'd look into replacing before something happens and believe me you get REALLY pissed off.

It's definately worth it.

talk later
