Default taking rust off rotors?

my dad's friend got me a set of used cross-drilled and vented rotors off a 325i, so I was going to stick them on the ti since I'm pretty sure my front rotors are warped and I want to upgrade to vented rotors anyway. just so I'm sure, all I have to do is swap caliper carriers and they'll work, right?

the rotors are also coated in rust from sitting, anyone know how to remove the rust? I could always just drive on them but I plan on getting new pads and would rather not do that to them. I know I could have them turned but that costs money

As long as you're using new pads you should be fine. The problems usually occur when you use old pads on new rotors due to deposits on the pads. As for the rust, you could use a wire wheel on a rotozip or high speed drill. I don't think you can put drilled rotors on a brake lathe. Make sure you wear a mask and some safety glasses though.

I have done this with a dremel, it used a lot of bits. I would recomend something more heavy duty like the rotozip. This may leave a bit of a glaze on the rotor, plus uneven smooth/rough spots so take it easy at first. Ride slowly while riding the brakes then give it a few hard stops making sure you have plenty of room. Just be careful at first on public roads. They may be able to scrap most of it off very quickly, but im not sure if this could effect the pads so i would try and get some of it off at least to be safe. I thought you needed 6cyl calipers also since the tis are not wide enough to handle vented rotors? Please correct me if im wrong because this would save me some money in the future.

sounds like a pain, my boss does have a pretty good resurfacing tool though, probably give that a try since we don't have a dremel or roto-zip type tool

I think the vented rotors are the same as the one's on 98 and 99 ti's, I'd like to get some clarification on that too so I don't tear it all down and then find out it doesn't fit

roto-loc discs on a pneumatic die grinder work for me. AFAIK, you can't turn drilled/slotted rotors, it'll probably damage the cutting bits, and possibly the brake lathe. And it usually costs damn near as much as buying new rotors!

The calipers are all the same, the carrier is different.

I'm pretty sure the calipers on the 325/328 are different from the calipers on the solid rotor tis. You'll need calipers and carriers to upgrade.

Why am I hearing different facts here, this is way too confusing. I have read about 30 threads on this subject, about 75% saying calipers are needed. But about 25% still say the stock calipers will work with the carrier. It seems to me that the vented rotors being 10mm thicker would require a caliper that can accommodate the extra thickness... Can someone confirm this who has tried to fit Stock calipers, with 325 carriers, and 325 vented rotors? Or can someone prove it has/can be done?

I guess it doesn't matter since buying the carrier separate isn't going to be any cheaper than buying a remanufactured caliper with carrier.

I have no idea, I just got a decent price on a set of calipers with carriers though so I'll do a little experimenting when I install them and answer the question

EDIT : just caught your post! ill probably forget to check when I get home, so let us know your findings. Im sure you'll be glad you got the calipers.
