I could always just drive on them but I plan on getting new pads and would rather not do that to them. I know I could have them turned but that costs money | | | 04-22-2010, 01:58 AM | #2 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | As long as you're using new pads you should be fine. The problems usually occur when you use old pads on new rotors due to deposits on the pads. As for the rust, you could use a wire wheel on a rotozip or high speed drill. I don't think you can put drilled rotors on a brake lathe. Make sure you wear a mask and some safety glasses though. | | | 04-22-2010, 02:46 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: North Carolina Posts: 190 | I have done this with a dremel, it used a lot of bits. I would recomend something more heavy duty like the rotozip. This may leave a bit of a glaze on the rotor, plus uneven smooth/rough spots so take it easy at first. Ride slowly while riding the brakes then give it a few hard stops making sure you have plenty of room. Just be careful at first on public roads. They may be able to scrap most of it off very quickly, but im not sure if this could effect the pads so i would try and get some of it off at least to be safe. I thought you needed 6cyl calipers also since the tis are not wide enough to handle vented rotors? Please correct me if im wrong because this would save me some money in the future. | | | 04-22-2010, 04:41 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | sounds like a pain, my boss does have a pretty good resurfacing tool though, probably give that a try since we don't have a dremel or roto-zip type tool Quote: Originally Posted by lysergicsurfer I thought you needed 6cyl calipers also since the tis are not wide enough to handle vented rotors? AFAIK, you can't turn drilled/slotted rotors, it'll probably damage the cutting bits, and possibly the brake lathe. And it usually costs damn near as much as buying new rotors! The calipers are all the same, the carrier is different. __________________ No more ti. | | | 04-22-2010, 05:15 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | cool, I'll start shopping around for them then | | | 04-22-2010, 06:30 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | I'm pretty sure the calipers on the 325/328 are different from the calipers on the solid rotor tis. You'll need calipers and carriers to upgrade. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 04-22-2010, 07:20 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | got mine (caliper/carriers) for $25ea through bavautorecyclers on ebay. 6mo warranty too. __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 04-22-2010, 07:48 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Auburn, WA Posts: 1,814 | yeah u need calipers and carriers, thats all. __________________ 5/96 318TI Sport BIG TURBO | | | 04-23-2010, 02:25 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | damn, looks like realoem lists different numbers for the calipers, I guess they must be different | | | 04-23-2010, 03:07 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: North Carolina Posts: 190 | Why am I hearing different facts here, this is way too confusing. I have read about 30 threads on this subject, about 75% saying calipers are needed. But about 25% still say the stock calipers will work with the carrier. It seems to me that the vented rotors being 10mm thicker would require a caliper that can accommodate the extra thickness... Can someone confirm this who has tried to fit Stock calipers, with 325 carriers, and 325 vented rotors? Or can someone prove it has/can be done? I guess it doesn't matter since buying the carrier separate isn't going to be any cheaper than buying a remanufactured caliper with carrier. | | | 04-23-2010, 03:11 AM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | I have no idea, I just got a decent price on a set of calipers with carriers though so I'll do a little experimenting when I install them and answer the question | | | 04-23-2010, 03:14 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | I can almost gaurentee you need calipers as well...
