Question Bimmerworld M3 setup

Hey I just saw this.
http://store.bimmerworld.com/invento...les-p1066.aspx
What are the differences between the M3 brake setup and stock TI? This looks like a pretty good deal regardless.

the m3 is a lot bigger and heavier than the ti's. if you're running a stock engine you don't really need the extra stopping power, but then again i guess more never hurt.

Bigger rotors, more rotating mass.
I still think the brake bias changes.
Personally I think it is a waste of time and money.

That is just for the spindles... You still need caliper, bracket, rotor, pads, and you probably want to the bigger brake booster setup. Best option: Find someone parting out an M3 or 328 and buy their old setup.

Also, doesn't the M3 brake set-up require that you have 17" wheels for clearance of the bigger brakes?

I think there are some 16" wheels that will clear the calipers. Probably not many though. And of course you loose use of your spare for the front.
All you can do is put a rear tire on the front and the spare on the rear.
If anyone's spares even hold air after +10 years.

not sure how you'd manage that with only 1 jack either

Jack the rear, swap the tire with the spare.
Jack the front, use the tire from the rear.

I do want to offer a disclaimer and say that I work for BimmerWorld but I am happy to offer any help I can to other Ti owners.

You will be adding a little bit more bias in the front but we have mainly found the brake bias to be affected when the size of the piston inside the caliper has been dramatically changed.

We do offer two other M3 brake kits depending on if you need all of the parts or some of them. Your stock brake booster should work fine.

The differences partly depends on what brakes you have on your Ti. If I remember correctly most have a solid rotor and around '97 or '98 the sport models had a vented rotor. The rotors for the M3 are vented which will allow for better heat dissipation if you have the solid rotors. You will also have a larger brake and pad surface that allow for more friction to be created to help the car stop faster.

I'm running style 35 (z star) 16's with M3 front brake set up, I can say in my opinion the car brakes very hard and is nicely balanced in bias when late braking in corners.

Philly, you're gonna run into some issues with the e39 style 5's. Most 17" wheels will clear the M3 calipers and some 16" wheels will clear them. However, the inner mesh wheel centers on the style 5's will hit the M3 calipers. The M3 calipers have little bumps on the sides that stick out about 3-4mm too far. I believe that it's because the new brake pads cause the caliper to slide further out on the caliper carriers. As the brake pads wear, the caliper should slide in closer to the hub, but if you try to run the style 5's with new brake pads, the calipers will damage the wheels.

The solution, I grinded the "nubs" down on the calipers and now I have about 2mm of clearance. Here's a few pics that should help explain what I'm referring to:

Aren't they pretty

Mounted

Rubbing

Grinded

Bingo

BTW, I was very dissappointed when I realized you can't see the ///M through the style 5's. The mating surface where the barrels and centers meet blocks the ///M on the caliper from being visible
