The first '95 didn't last long with my son driving (not completely his fault...). Well, I found a couple this weekend, but one is at a dealer in NJ that has nothing but terrible reviews and the other is also a dealer and that car has issues. I am still considering the latter so let me elaborate. It is a '96 with 103K. It has the engine light on and they *think* (remember it is a dealer and repair shop) that it need a new cat. It has been repainted (haven't seen it yet) and I fear a cheapo job (pics look fine). They are asking 3K. Interior is good with the passenger window sometimes failing (don't they all?!). They *think* (again) it needs a motor and regulator. It also needs tires since they describe them as "good, but old." Claim it was driven by a woman for the last 9 years (heard that before ). I still have the '95. Tires are new so one problem down. The '95 has a new cat, but I think they differ from '96 (anyone know?). It does seem the O2 sensor (also new in the '95) is different as well. In fact, please let me know what can be used from the '95 on a '96. No need to spend money if I don't need to. What do you guys think? Does it sound ok or should I keep looking? Poor ol' '95. It is missed. It had dents and dings everywhere, but it was mechanically sound.... I don't miss the drapes, err, headliner. __________________ 2002 325xi 1998 318ti Last edited by trucks; 01-03-2010 at 06:27 AM. | | | 01-03-2010, 04:59 AM | #2 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | You might be able to have an o2 sensor bung welded into the '95's cat. The difference between '95(OBDI) and '96+(OBDII) is that '95's only had a pre-cat o2 sensor while '96 and newer Ti's have a pre-cat and post cat sensor. The sensors themselves are different, so you'll need to use the ones off of the '96 or replace them with new ones if they're bad. It costs about $185 for the pair. The cat on the other hand costs $1500 at the dealer for a remanufactured one and aftermarket cats usually don't work. So I'd expect it would be worth your while to have the '95's new cat modified. Personally, I'd keep looking. Better deals always pop up after you've made your purchase. | | | 01-03-2010, 05:08 AM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: CT Posts: 25 | Do the cats from Bavarian Autosport and FCP Groton not work? Oh, that will change the equation. __________________ 2002 325xi 1998 318ti | | | 01-03-2010, 05:10 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | they work for a month usually, then they go bad and set of a check engine light I'd try to find a 95 so you can use parts off your wrecked one, plus you can use a universal cat in the future | | | 01-03-2010, 05:17 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: VIRGINIA Posts: 324 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak I'd try to find a 95 so you can use parts off your wrecked one, plus you can use a universal cat in the future | Personally, I think that's outstanding advice. Bought mine for $3000 and spent about that same amount on suspension, engine overhaul and paint. Was well worth it though, it's practically a brand new car (with 165,000 miles on it) __________________ 1996 318ti - 2000 Z3 2.3 - 2012 MINI Cooper Hatchback | | | 01-06-2010, 02:31 AM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: CT Posts: 25 | __________________ 2002 325xi 1998 318ti | | | 01-06-2010, 03:02 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Burlington, NJ Posts: 560 | Quote: Originally Posted by trucks | I know exactly where that place is.... I really appreciate that and may take you up on it, but I got a line on one locally. It is a silver '98 with 116K miles and no issues. I see it Sunday and hopefully to my mechanic next week. Wish me luck. The way this search has gone, I need it! __________________ 2002 325xi 1998 318ti | | | 01-06-2010, 04:00 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Burlington, NJ Posts: 560 | Sure thing....
