Not sure if this has been brought up before (quick search didn't find much), or of this is the right forum (electrical?), but I've got a '95, pretty much stock, and I have an Apex'i SAFC II sitting around leftover from an old project. Is this something that's been done on one of these before, or is it possible with these ECUs? I know it's pretty straightforward on Japanese stuff, but this is my first BMW/European car, so I'm not sure. Just looking to zip this car up a little bit with a light tune, because it's not all that exciting to drive as it currently sits..... | | | 03-22-2015, 12:08 AM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Nov 2014 Location: Chicago Posts: 14 | Bump nobody? | | | 03-22-2015, 01:33 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | Your 95 ti has an M42 motor, which uses a chip in the DME, so flashing a new tune isn't possible. There are decent chips available at a reasonable cost, search for Midnight Tuning here on the .org, he probably has the best tune chip for the money... __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion. The reason I haven't gotten one of the chips available (nearly got one a few months ago, until I researched more) is because I've read you need to get a dealer reflash in order for any of it to work. The various SAFC models aren't actually map flashes, it works by essentially "intercepting" sensor signals from MAP/MAF sensors and modify the signal to fool the stock ECU into thinking the engine is getting different amounts of air to "correct" fuel levels delivered when the ECU is running open loop (outside of cruising conditions). I'll definitely talk to that guy though, thanks! | | | 03-22-2015, 02:32 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | I'll say upfront that I have no experience with the SAFC stuff, and while it sounds interesting, I can't comment if anyone has had success with one on our cars... As for a chip, I can state that no dealer reflash is necessary to swap out a chip. Numerous members here have swapped chips, myself included. I've used Barrie's chips twice before (in my M42 before I swapped it, and in my M50 touring). I'd still be using it, but he doesn't have a chip for my current setup (M50 swap with CAI and S50 cams). Good luck and let us know of your results! __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion. I saw somewhere that a dealership had to do something to unlock it or something, but that's good to know as a fallback! If I can find a good wiring schematic and an ECU pinout diagram, I'll give it a shot and get it tuned, then obviously post up some numbers. | | | 03-22-2015, 04:46 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | I have Barrie's chip for my M42. Straight chip replacement. too easy, great performance for the price.
